im looking at Dell, IBM but they see like over kill and too much $$$ for a machine thats just going to act as a VPN gate.

anyone know of where I can get something cheaper? I was even considering building one myself.

I don't know how you feel about used/refurb but I needed a 1U Dell for a really simple task, I found one on ebay with 2 years left on full warranty from Dell at a small fraction of the price of a new one.

RE:"I was even considering building one myself"

Start looking for 1U cases and go from there. Then again, do you really need something that thin?

Check this deal out...

Compaq Proliant, 1U, single processor, 128mb of RAM, I think that DL320s have either 30 or 40gb standard, but even if not, they use IDE, so it wouldn't be a lot more.

So after adding RAM and a hard drive, you'd be around $1100 or so, which is a great deal for a 1U Proliant.

If you have any questions about it I can call and get some details from my rep, or PM me and I'll give you her direct #.

1U servers are usually less reliable than their 2U cousins. I'd strongly urge you to go 2U if you can.

That said, if you're doing 1U, buy from a major brand and get the extended warranty. Dell and Compaq are both okay. IBM is likely higher quality, but higher price too.

2U you can build yourself without much worry.
