Now that Planetside 2 has shown what MMOFPS can be with newer technology, it'd be nice to get one for WW2. WW2 OL just never did it for me.

Title says it all

actually it doesnt say whether you're looking for 1st or 3rd person shooter, or what year qualifies as recent

i could be cheeky and ask if this thread is a joke since Steam is giving away a "recent WW2 shooter" for free right now

I am more interested in single player than multiplayer, and recent I would say up to 3-4 years old max? FPS

For years now I've been hoping for a new Day of Defeat to come along. Most fun I've ever had in a WWII online FPS.

The best WWII shooter I've ever played was Brothers in Arms. It's old, though. But the best.

How have I not heard anything about this game, it actually looks pretty good.

It's made by CI Games (formerly City Interactive). They're kind of a B-grade studio whose titles tend to fly under the radar most of the time. However, last year they released Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 and Alien Rage, both of which were pretty good. Actually, Alien Rage was pretty great.

I think they're making Enemy Front because they realized no one is really making WWII shooters anymore and they wanted to bring those back. Which I can respect.

not really WWII though.

Sniper Elite 3 is coming out soon. Sniper Elite 2 was pretty good.

Oh jeez. How in the world did I forget about Sniper Elite 3? I even have it pre-ordered but I didn't think to mention it in this thread. :p

Yeah, Sniper Elite V2 is a fun WWII third-person sniping game if you can get it for cheap. It was actually available on Steam for free last Wednesday, sorry if you missed out.

Red Orchestra 1 & 2 are solid games. Company of Heroes too but not my type of game.

I was a HUGE fan of Day of Defeat original (pre and post 1.0) and Source, there's still plenty of active players.

Maybe it's just me, and I'm no expert on graphics, but the graphics look really dated in parts. Take a look at the second preview video. Right at the end...you're behind a log pile made out of hexagonal logs....the flat tire on the German truck is a completely straight line......etc.

Having said that, some of the up close textures look amazing.

Enemy Front looks interesting, I welcome a return to the style of older WWII shooters.

But the gold standard for me in FPS mechanics is probably Red Orchestra 2. It is fun, tense, and realistic. And I find that after a few rocky intro hours, my in-game behavior matches that of soldiers in many WWII films and shows like Band of Brothers.

Some examples of realistic behavior are hopping from cover to cover, short bursts for suppression, and entire lines retreating once a breakthrough happens. Very cinematic in feel but also very realistic.
