Any receiver alternatives to the Sony STR-DN1080 I should definitely take a look at?

I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a new receiver. The last receiver I purchased was a Pioneer VSX-1014X back in 2004-5 so I keep them for awhile. I've honed in on the Sony. I'm just curious if there are any others at a similar price point that I should definitely consider?

I've spent a lot of time reading over at AVSForums, but always like to read opinions here :)

Thanks!

I would take a look at the Denon line, maybe find a showroom store (Best Buy, etc...) to give a listen to some of the different options out there..
Maybe the AVR-S730H... I have the Denon AVR-X1400H and I like it for my 5.1 setup...

I've used a Sony STRDH820 for my home theater since June 2011 and have not had any problems except this:

With the remote it's easy to hit the wrong button at night in a dark room and put it into zone 2 mode even with no zone 2 connected. I only do this a few times a year, then I have to remember the right buttons to get back to zone 1.

I like it better than than Onkyo that it replaced.

FYI, Amazon has the Sony STR-DN1080 for $389 right now.

(Looks nice - built in chromecast (edit: audio only :( ) and high-bitrate Bluetooth audio, 6 HDCP 2.2 inputs. Hmmm, it might be time for an upgrade....)

Looking to replace mine as well. Reading reviews. Trying to narrow down between Denon, Yamaha, Pioneer Elite or Sony. My old unit is Yamaha RX-V2700.

A friend of mine says Denons have the tendency to be "bright".

Opinion on any of these brands?

I'm torn myself.

That Sony looks nice, but one Amazon reviewer mentions that Sony disables support for older models in their Android and iOS apps, so after 3? years they take it away from you even though your receiver is still working.

Discussion thread - the 3-year old model that some people have bought within the last year - Sony too lazy to even keep a frozen build with legacy support in the Google and Apple stores:
https://community.sony.com/t5/Home-Theater-Products/STR-DN1050-and-Music-Center/td-p/637625

I've heard and read good things about Denon for a couple of decades now but I've somehow never managed to buy one. It's probably because they had great amplifiers in their receivers but lagged behind the others in video device support (HDMI, upscaling, etc.) or were much more expensive for the features I wanted (like $500-600 instead of $300).

I'm less familiar with Yamaha's receivers, other than having a vaguely positive impression of them being better than Onkyo, Panasonic and Pioneer's non-Elite.

i prefer the Audyssey room correction, denon has it, as do some others.
would have went marantz, but was limited by budget

there are tons of threads on avsforums for budget receiver, budget to me is under 500.

Oh, and I still like Sony for receivers. Not fond of their headphones and some other things, but they make good receivers.

Thanks for all of the replies! I think Sony is still in the lead, but Costco just put the Yamaha TSR-7810 on sale for $399.99. I know it probably sounds silly but having a few more legacy inputs for component cables would still be nice. The Sony doesn't have any.

I HIGHLY recommend the onlyo 710 model

https://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-RZ7...&ie=UTF8&qid=1512060895&sr=1-6&keywords=onkyo

Has it all under the sun, and IMO, the best amp under the sun, that will give your ears the candy they want to drool for :O :) HDMI, composite, Component, Hdmi, Optical, coaxial, FireConnect, Cromecast, all the new sound versions (Dolby Atmos, etc), Great amp inside it, 3 YEAR WARRANTY, heck of a price for what you get out of it, what more can you ask for ;)

Another vote for the Marantz slimline. I own the older NR1606. It has stereo pre-outs so that when you want to listen to music through a better more powerful quality amp you can. This frees you from having to spend oodles of money at one time on an AVR with a beefy amp section. What surprizes me is two years later, my old NR1606 is still getting firmware updates.

you are not comparing them with the same data
the str1080 is 100w into 6 ohm stereo
what is it for all channels drive?
the nr1608 50 watts at 8 ohms
and 100 at 6 ohms
(http://www.us.marantz.com/us/Products/Pages/ProductDetails.aspx?CatId=avreceivers&ProductId=NR1608)

Ah, thanks. I just was looking at the Amazon short descriptions not the full specs :) . The lower power in their listing made sense to me because of the smaller size.

Still rocking my denon 3805. I don't need no stinking apps.

I like the idea of using a tablet or phone to control playback of music attached via USB or LAN, instead of needing to stream it from the tablet or phone. Also, Bluetooth doesn't support lossless formats like FLAC.
