Any reason to root a non-contract smartphone?

I have an old android phone I'm taking with me to France in a few weeks for use as a Wifi device. (Droid Incredible 3g)

Any reason this thing would need to be rooted? I just want it for basic email/skype type services.

I have a backup/global phone with me to make actual phone calls.

If you're thinking about doing the exact same thing you've been doing here but on wifi only, then you don't need to do anything.

You never need to root. Rooting just unlocks more function.
