Any reason to expect laptop prices to drop?

Planning on buying an HP laptop. Have one configured at their site but wondering if there's any reason to wait 2-3 weeks. Any indications that the prices would go down for holiday season?

no not really, laptops are pretty much never going to get cheaper, they'll get better, but not cheaper, same with most cell phones. That said, Black Friday.

I don't think you'll pay fewer $$, but you'll definitely get a better machine for the same $$.

HP puts out a 20% off coupon every once in a while. I'm waiting for the next one before I order.

if your buying a laptop from HP's website then no the price probobly wont change much

If you can wait a couple weeks for black friday and a deal at the stores I'd imagine you'd get a similar machine for a better price

At HP checkout get a summary of your laptops specs and post it in the SFF, NOTEBOOKS FORUMS asking if anyone can find a better deal. You'll get a dozen alternatives to look over in a few hours. That said, most of the Black Friday sales tend to be bare bones $299 - $399 models. Usually the Circuit City or CompUSA Acer laptop advertized deals give you the bigest bang for the buck. Good hunting.

Also I would not buy direct from HP unless I had a student discount in addition to a low low sale price. Most retailer ad specials Staples, Office Max, etc beat HP prices. Just like the retailers HP sales change from week to week so shop around.

But you can't custom-order a notebook in a store and get those special deals.

OP - no not really. Prices may dip towards end of Q4 if sales decline, but nothing major IMO. Before Vista is the time to buy IMO, sales are depressed partially due to the wait for Vista and I'd say better deals may be had then.

Sure you can. Staples has Configure To Order laptop deals all the time. You have to go in to the store to buy and two weeks later your custom built laptop arives from China.
