Any reason to buy DVD+R/RW media?

Can anyone explain this shady stuff to me? I know that DVD-R/RW is more compatible than the + variety. Also I heard the + was cheaper, but seems like that's just not the case - prices are the same.

Given that, is there any compelling reason why I should settle for the + format instead of the - or am I missing anything here?

Well if your burner only does + media like mine, then the choice is clear.

Otherwise I'd just get whatever's cheaper. I've never had a problem with compatability with my + media...

My Toshiba DVD-RW drive decided to quit working with DVD+R a couple of weeks ago, so I can only use DVD-Rs now. Also, the Toshiba tech support told me that DVD-Rs are more compatible with most DVD players. It would seem like the DVD+Rs would be more compatible, but we live in a world that doesn't make sense.

Mine is a NEC 3500A, not the greatest thing around, but it does both formats equally well. And I did witness a compatibility problem with the +R stuff on a 2000 IBM laptop's DVD drive - would read only the - stuff.

If you have book type seeting to change DVD+R to DVD-ROM format I don't think it matter at all but one of my burners I can't change the book type setting so I only use DVD-R with it and my other burner that changes the book type sttings on DVD+R media I use what ever.

+R if you change the book type to DVD-Rom is the most compatible format for the most part. if you can't change the booktype then -R tends to be a bit better. but not by much, it just depends on the specific DVD hardware you have.

how do you change booktype. i know my burner supports it but i dont know where it's under. i have nero6 and sonic record now on a liteon 1633s BS41 enchanced firmware.

+R is more compatible than -R. In the old days, -R was more compatible but things changed with +R and booktype.

You can download utility for your burner to change it or some burn program like Nero can enable it with a checkmark.

First, neither format is more compatible than the other today. +R was theoretically superior as the original spec allowed writes to be interrupted and resumed, but I don't think I have seen a good implementation. -R's spec has since been updated and may make provisions for it. The practical application would be DVD Camcorders. Sony's support -R, +/-RW. Hitachi and Panasonic supports DVD-RAM, -R. This was actually a surprise to me as I thought this would have been a +R thing, but it is not the first time that Alliance members did not follow their spec (they being Sony). BTW - Pioneer writers can read -RAM (a plus over others).

Regarding booktype, that is for video only. Booktype does nothing for data disc. One would use booktype to support older DVD players. Even with the booktype set to DVD-ROM or correct booktype, the dye color can make a disc unreadable for older players. I have encountered both situations over the years. Newer players do not care and setting the booktype has no benefit.

+R theoretically has a performance edge, while -R has a compatibility edge. I keep some of both and use +R for stuff I'll use myself and -R for stuff I send to others.

wheres the hell the booktype with -r, this should be evenly matchedgame, this is so unfair!!! with booktype for -r reading them at 16x would be nice and makes +R not so good like in the old days 😀
