You can permanently brick your console in some cases; a local place that does repairs told me that every Wii that gets modded with the DVD-player functionality eventually bricks itself.

If it's modded your warranty is done. If it breaks you're screwed.

I could believe the drive dying, but bricks itself? Eh, not so sure I believe it.

Anyways, no, as long as you keep it piracy-free, it's quite unlikely you'll brick your system. Most of the bricking stuff has to do with iffy IOS versions and such that are associated with loaders. Just putting BootMii on there is unlikely to hurt.
