any reason not to get the Samsung Galaxy S II X?

Howdy y'all,

At first I thought, god damn that is way too big. Now I'm actually considering it. Right now I'm using a POS LG Breeze dumbphone.

I was thinking about getting the Nexus S, several of my coworkers got it and they're very pleased -- but then this Galaxy S II X came out, and damn it looks pretty good overall.

What I like about it from a glance:

- very nice screen
- the 8mp cam seems to be pretty good and shoots reasonably nice quality 1080p video
- android 2.3
- little to no bloatware
- 4g
- dual core processor seems to run the show very smoothly

Is there any reason not to get this phone, or should I be looking at different phones?

The Galaxy Nexus is coming out soon and you might want to check that out:

Stock Ice Cream Sandwich right out of the box - No bloatware whatsoever

4.65 inch 1280 x 720 screen vs 4.3/4.5 inch 800 x 480 screen

4G LTE

You haven't told us your carrier.

Frankly, if you're on a dumbphone, it's not worth playing the waiting game. Buy the T-Mo/AT&T/Sprint SGS2 now and enjoy.

starting with the 1st model of Galaxy i have always seen this as the best Android device. and i still think version two is the best upgrade on the market for it!

but the AMOLED is Super AMOLED, so in a way, it's inferior. Only pixel resolution is better.

technically it may be inferior in one aspect of the screen tech (pentile) but when you hold them side by side the GN screen is much much more appealing than the GSII screen.

Anything you get will feel amazing considering what you have. Get whatever SGSII variant is on your carrier. The differences between that and the new Nexus aren't that great, plus the SGSII should be cheaper through your carrier.

As a fellow dumbphone victim I would say the opposite; since you're not on a dataplan you're saving money every month you wait so it makes sense to hold out for the best phone possible. I'd at least wait for the nexus in a few weeks. Yeah if you're on some old android phone and are paying the $30/month anyway you might as well get a better phone. But I think of it as saving $100 every 3 months I can get by with my POS dumbphone while I wait for the perfect Android phone (unfortunatley they all seemed flawed on some respect). The Nexus might be it, but we'll see. The size and the pentile issues has me nervous and I'll need to see it for myself before I commit. In the meantime; money saved!

I guess it depends on the carrier, as others have said. The new Galaxy S II coming to at&t looks pretty awesome (basically bigger screen and LTE support).

I believe both at&t and Sprint offer their newest Android phones with the ability to uninstall almost everything they put on them without rooting the devices.

Exactly... these phones no matter how good are barely worth the 30 bucks a month + tethering + extra data if you need anyway. I went form a dumb phone to a palm pixi off contract for 50 bucks and if the palm phones didn't have free tethering I really don't think it would be worth it at all.

Obviously every user is different but if you've been hanging on with a dumbphone for even longer i have you can wait longer. Hell dumb phones are STILL better for calling and texting... and... having battery life. I might pick up the bionic or whatever is next... I'm undecided. Sometimes I go a week without using any smartphone features.

I've been using mine since Friday and I think it's absolutely amazing. I am coming from a Blackberry 9700 and wow, what a freaking difference. I mean it's like being in a whole new world. The speed is pretty impressive to me, but of course i have little to compare it to coming from the slow-ass Blackberry.

I'm assuming you are on Telus like me as I think this is an exclusive phone for them up here, with that name anyway. I re-upped for the stupid 3-year contract and got the phone for $99, then upped the data to 6GB which is a $30 add-on right now. My actual bill is only going to be about nine dollars more than with all of that and so far is has absolutely been worth it. This is the first time I've actually truly felt like I had a connected PC in my pocket as I can essentially do whatever I would want to do on my home PC, aside from gaming, and do it quickly and painlessly.

Sorry for the lack of details. The price isn't really a concern for me since I work for the provider (TELUS). 4.5 on the SGS2X is pushing it, 4.65 on the nexus prime.. I don't know, it just seems so excessively huge?

So the consensus seems to be... go for the SGS2X?
I can always upgrade again later if something really amazing comes along, but from what you guys are saying about this one, I should be pretty impressed!

The Nexus doesn't have hardware buttons, and that space is now added onto the screen space, so just looking at the numbers doesn't tell the whole story.

That being said, I don't think you can go wrong with either phone.

I don't think the size is an issue. One of my staff, who is currently on a 3G iPhone, was waffling on the size of the SGS2X because he thought it seemed too large, but he came over and played with my phone a couple of hours ago and he said it felt perfect in his hand. I too find it quite comfortable; I just need to find a case because I am scared to death of dropping it.

Heh, yeah, I saw that, but it's just so darn pretty, I don't want to hurt it. 🙁

This is what I use (silver color). It is awesome and I love it--adds just enough weight to make it feel like a phone, and pretty much equalizes the "feel" with the Iphone purist "Superior Build Quality" Nazis that invariably put their superior phone in a rubber case, anyway.

I think they only make them for the international version, though. :\

Maybe look into one of the lighter Otter Box (commuter) or something like that.

That looks pretty nice, but I think mine is slightly larger than yours. I actually like the weight as it is; the phones sits in my pocket for most of the day, so having it nice and light is great. We'll see what I can find out there.

I just worried about the weight increasing my likelihood of dropping it, and putting too much pressure on it while in pocket.

Probably not a problem, just one of those things. the added weight with some of these cases is barely noticeable, though.

and yes, yours is bigger than mine.

:hmm:

They don't make this for the US versions, either. Not yet, anyway.

Ordered monday, received wednesday!
popped in my sim card and poof, up and running! 😀

So far so good, still learning as it's my first smartphone. I tried downloading the speedtest app, but it just stays at loading and never goes anywhere (even when using a wifi connection). weird.

😀

Awesome. Enjoy the new phone. I suggest you try some high-end games on there. I like Dungeon Defenders for one that works out of the box.

downloading it now
the initial download, 10MB took no time at all - but now to download the "game content" it's downloading 229 files, that's taking quite a lot more time lol.
