Any reason not to buy a Seagate 7200.10 Perpendicular HD?

Need a new drive and would like to stay under $100. 250-320GB is plenty as I'll also have a 120GB IDE in the system as a media-only drive for music and movies. Everything else will be on the SATA/3.0 primary. Anything better than the Seagate in the 250-320GB, 16MB cache, 7200RPM SATA market? Any issues with the newer Seagate 7200.10 Perpendiculars vs the older 7200.10?

I had 4 WD 80 Gig drives and three of them have died. I just purchased about 3TB of the 7200.10 Seagate drives. The 5 year warrenty of the seagates did it for me. Both companies seem to suffer from faiures but it seems the Seagates show thier colors in the first couple of days. The WDs were just out of the 1 year warrenty when I had issues.

WD's have 3 and 5 year warranties now

Also what do you mean older 7200.10?

I imagine he meant to type 7200.9

Nope, I meant 7200.10. In looking through NewEgg's selection some 7200.10's have the perpendicular recording right in the item title and others do not. Upon going back they have it mentioned in the fine print. Through reading the titles only I mistakenly thought that there was 2 different versions of the 7200.10's, those with PRT and those without.

I bought a Seagate a few weeks ago. The box is for 7200.9. But, what is in the box is 7200.10.

That of course is good and I am happy about that part of it.
However, the warranty, when I check it on Seagate's web site, shows the correct duration only if I enter the 7200.9 part number. If I enter the 7200.10 part number, which is written on the drive itself, I get a message that this is an OEM drive and I need to contact whom I bought the computer from for support!

I contacted Seagate and was told that all I had to do was to keep the box and if some day I needed warranty support they will provide it up to the 5-year period.

I have been buying Seagate mainly for the warranty. I don't like this situation one bit.

I HOPE these are reliable drives. I've purchased around ten of the 320GB version for myself and for clients in the past month......

Drive warranties are usually primarily dependent upon the Serial Number. Drive makers use that to determine the manufacturing date and the warranty date. Boxes and receipts don't typically mean much in the hard drive warranty business, it seems.

You may be suggesting that there are no two Seagate drives with identical serial numbers. I hope you are right. If that was the case though, I wonder why this web page would require more than just the serial number!

I have an Barracuda 7200.9 SATA 120gb, and a Maxter DiamondMax Plus 9 SATA 80gb. The only problem I have with the Seagate is that it runs preaty hot (48 deg. cel. w/fan off and 37 deg. cel. w/fan on med.). I have alrady had to replace the HDD cooler and the new one dosnt work like it did when I first installed it. But compaired to the WD I still would go with the Seagate. I have used WD before and was not impresed with the way they failed.

Just picked up one of these up a couple of weeks ago. I've been using a 200GB Maxtor PATA drive for the longest time, and after switching to this SATA 7200.10, I immediately noticed the increased speed along with a virtually silent operation compared to my Maxtor. It's beautiful.

The only small reason I can think of is that they're somewhat noisey. The spinning is near silent, but the data access has that somewhat loud fast ticking sound that I thought went away after the days of old 8GB hard drives. Compared to my WDs and one of my older 160GB Hitachis, the data access of the Seagate is a lot louder.

I agree...the last 2 Seagates I bought were great drives but the loud seek noise drove me nuts...

This is only a personal preference, but I am sold on WD. Their drives have a 5 year warranty too. Most of them anyway.

So do Seagate drives.

Yep thats why I switched to samsung spinpoints, run cooler too

There are loud 7200.10s and quiet 7200.10s. You can tell by reading a few posts on SR Forums. I just bought a 7200.10 for $90 on the egg and it should be arriving today. I'm adding this to my rig which has a Raptor ADFD, 7200.9 and a 7K250.

That's strange because Seagates are considered one of the most quiet drives.

For me I've had both WD and Seagates die on me. WD's have been much easier to RMA IMO. I'd still buy either but just thought I'd mention that.

For sygyzy , the new 7200.10 drives have been noted to be quite loud copmared to other Seagate drives.
