Any reason I shouldn't get a 36" Wega XBR?

Maybe I should go for a big screen HDTV? Or something else? What would be the better choice without spending over $2,500?

The XBR Wega is oh so pretty though.... I'm not sure what TV to buy 🙁

I seen both tvs at best buy too and I have to agree with iamwiz. The toshiba had a much better picture quality then every other tv I saw in there.

You guys sure the Toshiba was next to the XBR model of the Wega? Neither of the 2 local Best Buys near me actually carry the XBR model for some reason. If you compare the regular Wega to the XBR you can definately see the difference.

I can also get the XBR for about $1,800 which is making this a tough choice...

Becareful at best buy when comparing HDTV.
Some of those HD sets will be using HD signals and others are using analog, the sales people at my local best buy made a mistake when they talked to me. They explained which TV's were using the HD signal and which had the analog...long story short they didn't realize one of the sets they said had the HD signal wasn't even an HD set, it was just a 32" plain-jane sony. Seemed funny at the time...it had a gray case and blended in perfectly with the gray HD sets.

Another thing to keep in mind HDTV sets can be very tempermental, some are great right out of the box, others may have a problem or two needing adjustment like; red push, over-scan, etc. HD sets are not like old analog TV's that either worked or they didn't, these HD sets have ALOT of crazy adjustments that can and should be serviced.

if you're going to get a 36 incher, might as well get an HDTV. Wega is not HD. also, when i saw the wega's in store, they had a lot of jaggy edges on the picture, and i didn't like them too much.

I have a 36XBR 450 and love it.
You can't go wrong.
Awesome investment..... part of me wishes I waited for the 40" XBR, but then again it costs 1K more and I am sitting
only 8 feet away as it is now 🙂

Depends on what your viewing habits are.

If you watch a lot of DVD movies and live in a town with HDTV broadcasts (like CBS, ABC, FOX does some 16:9 480p broadcasts), then I'd say use that same $$ and get a larger 16:9 RPTV (like Hitachi 43", Mitsubishi 46 or 55")

Save up a little more and get the 34XBR2!

This is an absolutely unbelievable TV.

I have a 36XBR400 and it doesn't even compare to the 34XBR2. The picture on the XBR2 must be like 3x sharper than my TV. The pictures look almost 3 dimensional.

And Breakapart is right. You shouldn't just go visit one store and say that a certain TV looks better than another. You don't know what condition the TVs are in. The Sony could have been on 24/7 for months while the Toshiba could have been brand new.

For example, I saw a Sony 53HS10 at a CC and it looked unbelievable then I went to another CC and it looked like crap.

Try here for some TVs. I purchased my 36XBR400 there without problem and it was about $500 cheaper than CC or BB wanted (they would not negotiate either).

I bought the 36" XBR400 a little over a year ago, along with a Yamaha/Klipsch surround-sound home theater setup. Spent way too much $ but I really don't care... It's very, very nice. The picture quality is awesome (on any of the non-XBR tvs, Sony or not, focus on a point on the screen and you'll start to see all the display lines. Not so on the XBR...)

40" would be great, but probably too big for my apartment anyway.... 🙂

Best Buy only carries the HS model, not the XBR, although I've had two BB employees tell me that the HS was top of the line. I laughed in their face.

My dad has the 32" XBR Wega. I'd only get this TV if you have a some good source material. Watching regular TV get can pretty ugly with a bunch of grain and artifacts from the line doubler. If you have a good digital cable feed or Directv, then it will look good. Progressive Scan DVD is great on this TV. I just wish there was some HD content in my area. Not about to spend $800 on HDTV directv for 2-3 channels.

The standard Wegas are not HDTV, however, this thread is discussing the XBR Wegas which are HDTV ready "hi scans".

And yes, I'd get the XBR. I have a ten year old 32" XBR that works and looks as good as the day I bought it.

I also have two 57" Sony HDTVs that have an incredible picture.

No wonder you are so Amused 😉

And yes, the XBR400 and 450 are HDTV ready. The 34XBR2 even has a built in HDTV decoder where the 36XBRs do not.
