Any real tests of Raptor 74GB yet?

The StorageReview review of an engineering sample looks sweet, fast seeks for map/level loading in games without the whine of the current 36 GB.

But SR's isn't an actual retail drive, so it would be nice to confirm that's what I'd really get for my $300(!)

anyone? the shipping drive might or might not match the SR pre-release one, and quiet = good.

I got one running right now. I wanted a 36 GB drive but the comp store I go to didn't have them in and this was their last 74 GB one. I got a bit of a discount, only paid $370 cdn (still ouch though). This thing is fast. The sandra benchmark shows it as slightly faster than 2x 80 GB ATA 100 raid 0. Pretty damn sweet.

It's idle noise is very very low, but you can definitely hear it loading. I did a defrag and it chattered away quite well.

Just a quick qualitative idea of how fast it is: I was playing some half-life (single player going through it) and you know how it stops to load every once in a while? Well with this drive that load time lasts about 0.2 seconds by my estimate. It's really more like a super small lag spike when playing multiplayer games. Also, CS maps load in noticeably less time than on my old 80 GB WD special edition. I'm always the first into the new map now.

Thanks -- I'm thinking of putting in a 7200 RPM for the OS and work apps, and the 74 GB Raptor for games. That way when I'm working, neffing, etc. I'd only get the idle noise from the Raptor. When I'm gaming I'd get the seek noise but I'd be much less likely to notice it then.

Is the idle noise whine-free? People say at least some of the 36 GB's are pretty annoying even on idle.

No noticable whine. Actually this one has less whine than my 80 GB special edition did.
