Any REAL Tactical Shooters Left?

I am making a return to the world of PC gaming after about 4 years of exclusivity to consoles.

But really, my question has little to do w/ the previous statement. My question is, are there any REAL tactical shooters still out there? The new Rainbow 6 and Ghost Recon games are more tactical than something like UT4, but still they don't hold a candle to the original Rainbow games.

Picking teams, weapons, entry points. Choosing paths. Setting hold points for coordinated assaults. That was awesome. Maybe I should just install some of the old R6 games (will they even still work) or is there something newer that will give the same experience?

SWAT 4 is your best bet for what you described. Ground Branch has potential but info is scarce, as is a release date.

If you're willing to try something that's still tactical but a little different, give Silent Storm a shot. It's a turn-based RPG where you control a small team of commandos with different abilities. Very cool game.

Yeah, SWAT's your ticket. However, it's quite different as you are encouraged to arrest rather than shoot suspects. In an ideal level, you wouldn't do any shooting, just gassing and tasering them. Rarely do you bust in w/ an AR and shoot them in the face like Rainbow.

Realism in FPS really isn't there yet, but it is getting there.
It is hard to make a real fps and not have it be boring to most players.

If you want real and tactical try out paint ball in the real world.
Most fun there is to be had without actually putting yourself in danger.

I do play paintball. Airsoft is a little too fringe-y, weird guys in camo in the mountains for me. Thanks for the game suggestions tho :)

I agree, Airsoft is the way to go. Paint Ball guns look like toys compared to a fully automatic Airsoft gun. Then again, airsoft guns feel like toys compared to real guns. I am still waiting to for the day that they can charge BB's so that they will disable parts of your body temporarily for some added realism. Then we could go to war and disable everyone and then squat over them like in the BF games!

Paintball guns come in any shape you want. With its larger bore and with red paint, a painball game is a lot more realistic looking than air soft toys.

Reviews look good... but where can one buy this game? I suppose I might get lucky and find it in a bargain bin somewhere.

Silent Storm? I had a very hard time finding it myself; some random Yahoo store with tons of rare games had one copy in stock, but I don't remember the name of the store. This is all I could find:

GrabCart.com

I've never used that site so buyer beware, YMMV, etc. If all else fails, you may have to look in Davy Jones' Locker.

It's a decent game if you are into the old X-Com games, the voice acting is terrible, the translation from German are a little weak, and the last 1/3 of the story is total crap.

But, the mechanics are rock solid and the game is a ton of fun if you appreciate these types of games.

I'm stuck with a dodgy laptop until I can sell my old motorcycle (thus freeing up funds for the next computer) so a game that doesn't require much is a necessity for now.
I confess that I have been playing Jagged Alliance 2, so I already know that I like this style of game... if it will actually run without crashing every half hour it'll be an improvement over JA!

Ya, it's all tactical as long as you try to play realistically (i.e. almost everyone uses a lethal weapon as their primary). Otherwise, as I found out on my 3rd time through, it becomes a very standard shooter if you load everyone up on beanbag shotties and pepper balls; just remember which levels have people with gas masks or you'll be crying.
