Any real reason Windows operate slower and slower as days go by?

regardless of what you do!

cleaning the registry, start-up options, defragging, obliterating obsolete restry strings/value, file associations, etc... The only truly cleaning is to format..

This applies to WinXP. Don't say because they suck, please give me some insightful logics behind this.. why?

because i'd hate to reformat my XP and reconfigure everything every 6 months or so. Am I missing something? (i don't think)

windows has a built in subroutine that adds NOP commands continuously so that it becomes sluggish over time...so by the time u buy the update anything is faster in comparison :p

maybe Memory Leaks. Programs load and unload but don't free up memory... until you reboot and start over..

or, On every install/uninstall Extra stuff on the harddrive that doesn't get cleaned (dll files, etc) or can be included as stuff that loads even though you don't use it.

That said, My XP isn't noticibly slower now than it was x months ago. But I'm not constantly changing stuff...

Also, windows updates/directx/mediaplayer/etc may be using more resources than when you started.

does it 100% accurately restore everything to the last setting I've had?

Yes.

The only thing I've found out is a restored machine will lose its trust relationship with its DC. No biggie though.

Cheers!

Well the registry gets filled the more stuff you install and stays even if you remove it. About Windows slowing down, I think it is primarily a myth, I have never noticed such things.

windows doesn't like it when you download, install, and uninstall like 100 game demos though

Eh, not such for me...this is the longest single install of windows I have ever had - going on 15 months - and winxp is just as speedy.

Use a smaller hard drive partition for your operating system and maybe the major programs you use.

Get windows installed, as well as any necessary programs (word, office, spybot, adaware, winamp, etc. whatever you want installed.)

Have a 2nd partition the same size as the first to create an image when all is installed. Then, on a 3rd small partition, put program updates, etc. as they arrive. Then, every few months, restore your primary partition with the image you saved.... then go to the 3rd partition and install all the program updates that have arrived during the few months. Makes it pretty easy.

Win2k Pro doesn't do that ;)

My current install is ~16 months, still as fast as day 1.

Ghost is great. I picked up my copy of Norton Systemworks 2003 w/ Ghost for $9 online. Check the HD forum.
