I've been tempted by closeout prices of Lenovo EOL NAS units from the era of 2012 to 2014, and other than no continuing support, EMC software sold to Dell is I think the issue, they don't suffer too much when compared to current NAS models. Two clear weaknesses stand out, no ethernet above basic 1 GB, and potential limits on drive sizes (but some report success using 8TB drives).

Has there really been so little improvement?

Are we about to see a period of advancement?

Since you are looking at older units, in addition to hardware capabilities make sure you are reviewing protocol support for whatever you nab.
For example, older units may not support newer versions SMB or you have certificate\ssl issues when running the admin console.
