Any Real Point To Maxblast?

I have recieved and am going to eventually install my new Maxtor 200 GB Diamond Max Plus 9. Anyway, after reading through the manual, it says that you must first run Maxblast (by booting to the CD provided) and then install Windows XP.

The question is -- can't I just skip right to the Windows XP installation? I don't want to install any crappy EZ-BIOS or sh!t that I don't need. I know that Windows XP has a 137 GB limit before service pack 1a (or am I wrong?). I am going to use a slipstreamed XP CD to install Windows, so is Maxblast necessary?

It's not about installing EZBios or anything. If you don't format, you can't load anything on the drive. Maxblast is used for partitioning and formatting the drive, and no you don't load any junk on the hard drive with the program.

So you're suggesting screw MaxBlast, just use the Windows XP CD to partition/format? I really think that would be the best/easiest option, but then, I've never installed Windows on to a 200 GB hdd.

BTW -- What is with this 137 GB read barrier? Like I said, my XP disc is slipstreamed with service pack 1a, so will it read it as ~200 GB, or ~137 GB?

Thanks

I'd just partition\format with the XP disc and see if it'll recognize all 200GB, if not then try MaxBlast.

MaxBlast also lets you clone a drive onto your new one, if you want to run the OS off your new drive without reinstalling, for example (you can expand the partition when going from a smaller drive as well). Not that there aren't other utilities for this, but this is free and comes with your hd (provided it's retail). ^^

My question is for the people who have this hdd, did you run MaxBlast, or did you just install during Windows XP Setup?

Also, for those people, did you happen to install the Big Drive Enabler?

"Failure to install SP 1 for XP or SP 3 for 2000 and the Big Drive Enabler will cause data loss when accessing the drive beyond 137 GB."

For those who have an oem Maxtor, MaxBlast is available for download at the Maxtor website.

I use Maxblast. There's nothing wrong with it, in fact I think that Maxblast and Seatools (Seagate branded version of the same app) are excellent. I don't see how XP lets you partition during install (format, yes, partition, no). So Maxblast suffices.

using maxblast will shave a huge huge amount of time...

it partition and formats super quick
rather than the long format that you have to undergo with WINXP installation...
since the first time you partition you aren't allowed to quick format.

Using maxblast won't hurt y our system. I used it to setup my hard drive first then installed XP

Nah.. I don't use that crap. I just recently installed a 120 gb Maxtor and just used Windows XP to format and partition the drive. Even when I was using 98x, I would fdisk and format myself. I don't trust software like that. As for cloning drives, I use Norton Ghost.

I never use the vendor provided software. The Windows XP cd has everything you need. partitioning is a breeze with XP.
I got screwed by WD software onetime, lost everything on a 100 GB drive. Just glad it still works.

Go google a review on Maxblast software. It is trash.

Thanks

If the IDE controller is ATA133 based, no problem on using full capacity.

I've been using Maxtor since the dawn of time, and never once even installed or used this software before. No need apparently.. :p
