I have an ASUS P3BF which has an ATA33 controller and I have an IBM 75GXP 30gb drive. Is it really worth the trouble of installing the Promise Ultra 66 controller ? I am aware that this IBM drive is an ATA100. But I cannot get the Promise Ultra 100 controller locally.

If nothing else, you'd be giving yourself a couple more nice speedy IDE channels. For what the Ultra 66's are going for now... why not?

while overall I'll say that it isn't really worth the money, that IBM DOES have a sustained transfer rate of 37 Mb/s at it's outer edge which would saturate the ata 33 controlled which can only handle 33 Mb/s MAX.
so for maximum performance, you'll need to get either an ata66 or 100 controller.
the final decision is yours! :)

I have been told that Promise controllers can corrupt drives under certain conditions. Is this a fact ?? Somehow I have doubts as I would have seen people mentioning this in this forum if they had had corrupted drives by using these controllers.

I've used both the Promise Ultra66 card and Ultra66 onboard controller on the BX Master. I've never had any drive problems with them.

Don't bother.

I have a 66 drive on a 33 controller.

One weekeend, I went and bought the Promise 66, several reinstalls later, I returned the Promise 66. My problem was that my mb had all slots filled once the controller was in there. System just could not handle it all. I gave up.
