Any real difference between regular USB cables and gold plated ones?

Is there really any reason to get the ones with gold plated connectors? (such as the Belkin model)

well, gold plated interconnects have only one big advantage, they won't corrode.

but frankly, i've been using the same USB cables for years and corrosion isn't exactly a problem.

it's basically a way to charge more...like those gold-plated printer cables.

IMHO, it's not worth the extra cash

Just dont let a store manager hear you say that, cables are pure profit for the likes of best buy and compusa, you might make them cry (or attack you)

Why get gold plated when your system usb ports, every usb hub I've seen, and every usb device has regular plated ones?

They're just trying to rip you off....

Heh... I know what you mean. I bought a printer at Best Buy awhile ago (their price was as cheap as anyone else's at the time) and as I was heading to the checkout aisle a salesman asked me if I had a usb cable to go with it. I said no, so I took the 6' belkin gold series cable he offered me. It was $24.99. Later I discovered that I could have bought the very same cable online for about $8.00. That's the last time I ever buy any cable/accessory from BB.

You should have bought the $8 and returned it to the BB.

Compusa had an audio cable (the one that goes from your CD to your soundcard) for $25, and Fry's had the same cable for $9, and in truth the thing is probably only with less than $1.

even if they were faster is there anything that would really use it? i mean the performance difference on how fast you can send stuff to the printer would be negligible. maybe usb cable modems. but like said above, it's a marketing thing.

amen on that. no point to the exorbitant prices of usb or parallel port cables at best buy. woah. i about had a heart attack when they actually expected me to pay 30 bucks for a parallel cable. ought to come with a hooker for that much money :)
