Well? I'm looking for some new cd's to buy, preferably hip hop ish, with a beat, nothing hardcore.

Needs to be a mix cd, any recommendations/good dj's i should look at?

I'd pick up the Nightmares on Wax DJ Kicks or Kid Loco DJ kicks. Both tend towards the experimental/interesting/intelligent side. If you want something more HIPhop oriented try funkmaster flex vol 2 or like dj rectangle or sumthin.

Funkmaster Flex comes out with some good stuff now and then. But the rap scene these days have gone completely commercial. All style no substance for the most part. Don't get me wrong, there are still some cats that produce some hot stuff but little recognition is given to them.

Yeah, I have a few ideas for some good mix CDs...

Xero940's official DOPE-ASS MIX DISC LIST (say that three times fast :D)

For a more underground feel, with more unheard exclusives, get a mixtape/CD by:

DJ Kayslay
DJ Envy
DJ Mr Cee (harder to find)
DJ Green Lantern
Dan the Automator (generally featuring the rapper Del)

You can find these in your local mom-and-pop record store (one that is more hip-hop/rap oriented, that is)

If you want a more commercial mix, with some unheard hot tracks mixed with quality ones from popular acts, get a disc featuring:

Funkmaster Flex ("60 Minutes of Funk" series)
DJ Clue ("The Professional" series)
Hot 97 series (easier to find in NYC/tristate area; the internet will yield its collections)
The Source Magazine series (latest volume is Five I believe)

If you need more info/reviews on discs, head over to RapReviews and take a look at their review lists...you'll stumble on some gold there...:D

i like dj Spinna :p
the mix CD is pretty good.
Another more mainstream hiphop dj is Mastermind (from the T Dot)

dj Shadow is more experimental - but he's hype too.
Pretty sure dj Kemo (Rascalz) just came out with a solo mixed joint - haven't heard it myself personally, but his beats are sick.

Well, I tend to prefer dance/trance/house DJs over rap/hip-hop DJs...
DJ Mystik & DJ XTC are pretty good... DJ Dumb Bi if you can find em isn't bad either.

You should definitely check out the X-Ecutioners' "Built From Scratch" album. It's not out till the end of the month but they've been generating hype like no one's business.. I checked out a couple of tracks and I see why. Their DJ'ing skills are off the heezy (read: incredible).

Also good is Dilated Peoples' Expansion Team
It's one of my favorite hip hop CDs ever. Their beats are amazing.

Here's the best mixtape of all time in my opinion:

The Project Blowed. Featuring all of the Los Angeles underground's finest. In 1995, so far ahead of their time in terms of content, delivery, and rhyme style that you might get lost.

Here's a REVIEW
And here's a link to it at Amazon

My recommended hip-hop albums:
Aesop Rock - Labor Day; Atmosphere - Lucy Ford; Haiku d'Etat- Haiku d'Etat; Aceyalone - Book of Human Language; Mystik Journeymen - Black Sands ov Eternia; Illogic - Got Lyrics; Aceyalone - Book of Human Language, Mikah 9 - Timetable; Abstract Rude and Tribe Unique - PAINT; Living Legends - Almost Famous; Deltron 3030 - Deltron 3030; Dr. Octagon - Dr. Octagonacologyst; Freestyle Fellowship - To Whom It May Concern

Also, if you want some turntablism action, I would go with anything associated with the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, The Beat Junkies, the X-Ecutioners, Skratch Perverts, etc.
