My buddy got a new Asus 850E board, and he is deciding the btw Kingston brand and the Samsung 1066 RDRAM. The cost of the Kingston ram is 20 to 30 dollars more than the Samsung brand. In fact, Newegg's site claims the Samsung brand only works for the Asus board, is there any thing wrong with Samsung's PC 1066 we should know about.

Thanks for any help.

Okay, here's the deal:

Kingston: plain Jane PC1066 RDRAM (16-bit, 184 pin, to be used in mobos where modules must be installed in pairs)

Samsung: newfangled RIMM4200 PC1066 RDRAM (32-bit, 232 pin, to be used in mobos that have 32-bit RDRAM slots where modules do not need to be installed in pairs)

To my knowledge, the Asus P4T533 is the only mobo that uses the 32-bit RIMM4200 stuff, which is why newegg says that the Samsung RAM must be used in the Asus board.

Also, don't confuse the P4T533 with the P4T533-C, which uses the standard 16-bit RDRAM that need to be installed in pairs.

So in a nutshell, if your friend bought the P4T533, then he needs to get the 32-bit, 232 pin Samsung RDRAM. If he bought any other RDRAM board, then he needs to get the regular 16-bit, 184 pin stuff and install it in pairs.

The reply is a little confusing.

I bought the samsung memory which is specifically made for the P4T533-C.

This is from both the samsung web page and the Asus MB manual.

How is it confusing?

You have the P4T533-C, so you have regular 16-bit, 184 pin RDRAM. There's nothing "specifically made" about it. Getting RAM for the P4T533 is another story.

If your buddy has a P4T533, the Kingston will not work with his board. If he has a P4T533-C, the Samsung will not work with his board. They are two different types of memory interface wise.

When I was reading Shooters reply, I said to myself, "What a great reply". Very clear and not confusing to me anyway. I have an 850 rig, so maybe I have a head start.

I found it confusing from the other perspective. I just bought an Asus P4T533-C motherboard and the Samsung 1066 memory. It specifically says that this memory made for the -C motherboard. I just didn't want him to confuse this memory with the 4200 that shooters was speaking of.

There is also Samsung 16-bit RDRAM memory. I would buy this over the Kingston 16-bit memory. Samsung makes really high quality memory chips. In fact, I think Corsair uses Samsung chips on their XMS line of memory. They are handpicked, but none the less it shows they are definitely capable of making some really high quality memory.

They used to, but most of their recent stuff, especially the PC3200 and PC3500 use Winbond chips now..:)

Thanks, that is good to know. However, it doesn't change the fact that I would choose Samsung chips over Kingston ones.
