buy one and learn. It is the only way. You know back in the day's before the internet people took the time to actually learn a hobby.
anyway....rich/lean is the ration of fuel to air. rich = more fuel than ideal, lean = less fuel than ideal. lean = runs faster/more powerful but hotter (bigger explosion = more heat = more force on the piston)
it'll take you a while to get the hang of it but it is well worth the effort.
