Well, I found out and I guess it is true for 99% of the users that the most loud part in my system is the HDD. Try to unplug the HDD and switch on the computer, I bet You hear a tremendous difference. In fact HDD sounds exactly like fan noise, it is from the platter spinning.
I changed to Seagate Barracuda IV which is the most quiet HDD and now it is OK, like 5 times more quiet.

Just buy a power supply from Quiet Systems:
Quiet PC

Add some Papst case fans, which are virtually silent and there You go.

ya, i am aware that the hard drives are really loud (especially with my 10k scsi and 7.2k scsi), but my dad has the same 10k scsi drive, and his ibm workstation is really quiet.

Any of the Antec SX600/800/1000 cases have excellent airflow, and with quiet fans and a quiet PSU really do the job I think.

<< Quiet would Mostly depend on the fans you use with the case.. >>

hehe.. maybe i should have made myself more clear in the beginning.

right now, my inwin s500 doesnt really have any good hard drive cooling options, other than add-on drive bay fans, of which i have one. that is really loud for me, and i am trying to find a case with good hard drive cooling along with regular case cooling. what i really want is something like my dad's ibm case, and my goal is to be able to leave my comp on 24/7 in my bedroom. right now, its a tad loud to be sleeping with it on (not using any deltas here ^_^)

The front fans in both the Lian Li's and the Antec's push outside air over the HD's.

SX-antecs are really tough to beat. The front grille is functional and basically wide open, and the stock stamped metal case grilles are excellent, meaning that really quiet fans will give good airflow. The hdd can mount right behind the front air intake, you can ditch the hdd cooler. Thick sheetmetal, very good fit&finish, excellent features.

If you're happy with your psu, do a search on pricewatch for sx600, sx800, sx1000. these are the various models w/o psu. 80mm panaflo L1a fans or Silencer fans will do a good job in one of these low restriction cases.... Cool and quiet, just what you want.

I have both an SX600 and an SX1000, and one fan is mounted in front of one HD cage (SX1000 has two 3.5 inch cages) in each and one is mounted beneath.

Hhmmm... Go here, download the exploded drawing for the sx630/635-

Performance Series

Item 9 is a fanholder, fits inside of item 8, HDD cage, mounts behind the front intake grille. Capiche?

The lower drive cage in a 1030 has the same fanholder, while the cage in a 830 lacks the fanholder but mounts behind the intake grille. You really don't need front fans with either the 8xx or 10xx- your setup with the stock rear exhaust fan(s) will work fine....
