Friend is using quicken 2002 on a pretty new pc.. its not a core gamer machine but a core 2 quad.. The problem is quicken is very sluggish, I recommend maybe upgrading to 2010 version.. but I dont know how the file are stored and if really running a new version with hopefully better codes will help... any ideas or suggestions... is there like a file optimizer or something.. i google around and it seems the files get larger but no one really has an solution

Quicken seem to get slower and slower every year.

It might help holding down the control key and selecting 'validate'...it does a pretty deep validation...or pretty deep something.

Since the friend is using Quicken 2002 the data file may have 8 years of data or even more if a previous version was used and upgraded. I very significantly speeded up an old version by reducing the data file size. In my current 2008 version this is done on the File Menu -- File Operations -- Year-end Copy. This gives the ability to archive older transactions (prior to a date you pick) to a separate file. Doing this makes it a little less convenient to go back to look at older transactions but they are still available and it made a significant difference on speed for me.
