Now that they've imploded (RIP) and I (and you) will never hear another Rage for Order, Operation: Mind Crime, Empire, The Warning or even Promised Land album again from them I find myself craving more works by other artists like them.

Can you guys recommend any? I know there's no other bands just like them, but I'll take anything rock opera like or hard/heavy with intelligent lyrics...

Well, Queensryche would be described as a pink floyd sounding band.

Liquid Tension Experiment?

I find Muse to be this gen's version of a Queensryche type band. Thanks for reminding me I haven't listened to Operation:Mindcrime in awhile.

There's actually a ton of bands that take after early (S/T and The Warning) Queensryche, some to the point of being total clones. On the better and less derivative side there Crimson Glory and Titan Force. For something more in the mainstream direction ala Empire, Fates Warning has a few albums, in particular Parallels.

For more rock opera-style metal ala Operation: Mindcrime, 90's Savatage (The Wake of Magellan is probably the best of their concept albums to star with; Streets and Dead Winter Dead are both great too) and Shadow Gallery's Tyranny are about the closest there are. Savatage can be more piano/ballad-driven at times and Shadow Gallery is more progressive and instrumentally-focused, but they had similar ambitions to that period of Queensryche at least. Here's the opening song (i.e. the 'Revolution Calling', excluding story pieces) from each...

EDIT: Oh, and I forgot probably my very favorite of all, Vauxdvihl. Unfortunately the album is really rare and I haven't found all the lyrics, but it mixes the more melodic and progressive side of earlier Queensryche with a pretty dark sound more along the lines of Promised Land, and the music is very elaborate.

Sorry I'm too old for Pandora :) Actually I never found it to have good recommendations.

hmm Cinderella is an interesting pick, I'm going to have to check them out again after all these years.

Can you recommend one of their better albums? I've listened to them before, but it was random stuff that didn't really overwhelm me.

They have a live album I'd recommend. HAARP - Live at Wembley Stadium. If you happen to use Spotify I know it's available there. Absolution is my favorite of the studio albums. Black Holes and Revelations is a good one as well (heck, all of them are good). You may actually get hooked on that one just because of the opening track.

Dream Theater, Nevermore and Opeth come to mind. Most progressive bands have unique style, so you won't find an exact match.

Pagans Mind.

Their albums Enigmatic Calling and Celestial Entrance are amazing, his voice is very similar to Tates. Their latest is only so so, but they have one song on there that could be a Queensryche cover (if it weren't an original) that and reminds you of Operation Mindcrime era. Walk Away n Silencie

Dammit now I need to go listen to Operation Mindcrime again...

and if you are looking for new music...you aren't too old for pandora or slacker. It even pulls out music from the same era that you may never even have heard of that is similar.

Geoff Tate is a psycho. It's hard to believe his account (as shown on That Metal Show) of the way things happened versus everything that's been said by his bandmates and witnesses.

Anyway, it'll be hard to find a good match. As others mentioned, check out Opeth and DT. Fates Warning may tickle your fancy as well...

Hello All,

Well I stumbled across this post, and really only one person had an idea of what to list... But here's a play-list of Metal bands that not only sound like Geoff and Queensryche, but at times blow them away!!! There's even a couple "christian" bands as well, that way you can tell Mommy that not all Metal is Darkside based. You can view any of these bands on YouTube... I will list them band 1st then song.

I'm just scratching the surface here as there are a ton more awesome bands I could have listed!! But this is Metal at its Finest!!! for True "Metal Aficionados"

Next Year I'm planning on launching an All 80's/NWOBHM Metal band only station that will showcase all these yester-year bands..

I would suggest firing up a Bomber of fine Cannabis and listen to these songs, It'll be a religious experience of "enlightenment"

*Iced Earth: "Angels Holocaust/Stormrider"

*Agent Steel: "Still Searchin"

*Lethal: "What they've done"

*Recon: "Choose this Day" (christian)

*Fifth Angel: "Fade To Flames"

*Heir Apparent: "One Small Voice"

*Sacred Warrior: "The Heavens are Calling"
(christian)

*Lillian Axe: "Letters in The Rain"

*Exxplorer: "World War III"

*Jag Panzer: "The Crucifix"

*Fates Warning: "Guardian"

*Artch: "Burn Down the Bridges"

*Savatage: "The Dungeons are Calling"

*Helloween: "Giants"

*Cirith Ungol: "Fallen idols"

*Deadly Blessing: "Cry Of Medusa"

*Manowar: "Defender & Dark Avenger" (Even the Great Orson Wells knows Metal rules!)

*Titan Force: "New Age Rebels" (same singer as Jag Panzer)

*PowerMad: "Nice Dreams"

*Q5: "Steal The Light"

*Vicious Rumors: "Against the Grain"

*Warrior: "Defenders Of Creation"

*Screamer: "Visionary"

Enjoy...

A necro yes, but far from lame. Old-school trad/power like early Queensryche and the examples he gave own Porcupine Tree any day. Wimps and posers need not apply.

I just put 'empire' in my phone 2 weeks ago, wierd to see this thread pop up. My all time favorite music is Kansas. The Pinnacle is maybe my favorite song ever. Prog rock is the best music ever, and if you don't agree I will punch with your choice of Led Zeppelin albums.
