Any PS3 owners have your system in an enclosed entertainment center?

I have my PS3 inside my TV stand, the kind with the double glass doors.

Anyone else have their PS3 in an enclosed space like that and not have any problems? I just played 45 minutes of Fight Night Round 3 and the top of the PS3 feels pretty warm, way warmer than my Xbox360 gets in fact.

Is there a real danger here? I'd like the PS3 to not be sitting on the carpet if possible.

Although the PS3 has proven to be a very solid piece of electronic in it's first year on the market, nothing with that much power is good to keep in an enclosed space. It's highly recommended to have some sort of air circulation around the machine. The heat could very well have an effect on the life of your machine. If it were me, I wouldn't keep it in there. But of course, all my entertainment center purchases have been open-air shelving, so I guess I'm a bit picky about it 🙂.

no real danger, i believe the ps3 shuts itself off if it gets too hot.

even then, prolonged exposure to high temperatures below safety shutoff is no good.

my PS3 40GB (which has the lowest power consumption of them all AFAIK) ejects a lot of very warm air. I imagine putting it in an enclosed space would not be optimal.

Listen to the fan -- if it's still on low or medium you're fine, if it gets loud then you might need better ventilation.

My 60GB PS3 is very quiet at startup, but noticeably louder after a 2-hour blu-ray movie. I gather that's the medium setting because my brother tells me his PS3 got -very- loud in an enclosed cabinet with poor airflow. If your PS3 isn't that loud, its temp sensors must not be feeling the heat yet.

My 80 gig has three "noise" levels(not counting "off"):

1) Whisper
2) Noticable
3) Whirling vortex of doom

I typically stay between levels 1 & 2. The only time I have ever heard level three was the 3 minute trial run of putting it in my entertainment center. It didn't like that. I promptly put it back on the shelf above the TV where it no longer growled at me.

Inside a HT cabinet, but I leave the glass front open all the time, it has about 3" of clearance on the side for the fan and about 6" in the back. When the glass front is open, it is fine and quiet, when it is closed, it turns into the Whirling vortex of doom.
