any programs to test for dead pixels?

Yeah, MonitorsDirect has a monitor tester specifically for LCDs. It has a b0rked pixel detector, which is essentially a series of single-color screens (R, G, B, and maybe white and black). You can check their site, or just create a couple of screen-res pics of your own and fullscreen them in IE or IRFanView or the like.
 
Paint fill screen with different colors and look for dead pixels. You can also get Nokia monitor test to check calibration.
