My old p3 system has a M765VMRT board, by pcchips, in it. Anyone know if there is a descent processor that i can put on this board.

Right now it has a slot 1 600eb p3.

I also read an article at tom's hardware about putting a p3 1.4 in some old boards, is this possible for me?

www.powerleap.com , it is in fact likely that you can get that up to 1.4 ghz!!! They are selling that adapter for 140 right now. What chipset is in your board? You can go on that site and see if it will work, they test your current hardware for you.

its got a via apollo133 chipset, but the board actually has a socket 370 on it beside the slot, so it makes me wonder if i need an adapter.

Good news, you're in good shape. I'm confused to wether you have a socket 370 or a slot 1. I think you can do that powerleap thing though :). Or you can get a celery or another p3.

That board has BOTH a slot and a socket. Whether or not you can use Coppermine model processors depends on what revision this board is ... early ones came out at a time when socket-370 was celeron-only (the original black Celeron), and don't take Coppermine (green) CPUs. Trying doesn't damage anything btw.

The latest "Tualatin" P-III certainly aren't supported by the board's BIOS, as the chipset itself can't run them.

BIOS info here ftp://ftp.pcchips.com.tw/BIOS-n/M765vrt/ says up to 1GHz Pentium-III, Coppermine up to stepping D0 (which is the latest and last Coppermine stepping anyway).

Actually if you scrolll down here it says that the via 133 chip is a prime candidate for a tualatim p3. So give it a shot and analyze your system on www.powerleap.com, u can even send them your mobo name and they will see if it will work.

1.4 GHz Upgrade for 100 MHz FSB Slot-1 Systems: Only $159.95
You can buy a new CPU and a new mobo that will allow you to keep your SDRAM for that price.

- M7VIG Pro Socket A VIA KM266/8235 (266FSB/ATA133/2DDR/2SDR/Video/Audio/Lan/USB2.0) uATX $55.00

- Boxed AMD Athlon XP 1800+ (266Mhz FSB) CPU (w/ Heatsink/Fan) - 3 yrs warranty $72.00

- Sub Total $127.00 + shipping [$17 estimated] = $144.00 max from FTI Computer

Or for an Intel System:

- U8568 Pro Pentium4 Socket 478 P4X266E (533FSB/ATA133/2DDR/2SDR/Audio/Lan/USB2.0) ATX $54.00

- Boxed Intel Celeron PGA 478 1.7GHz (400FSB) CPU w/128K L2 Cache $59.00

Sub Total $113.00 + shipping [$16.00 estimated] = $129.00 from FTI Computer

Just a couple ideas, in case you didn't already have enough decisions to make. :p

The U8568 Pro is allegedly made by BIOSTAR, but I can't find any mention of it on Biostar's Taiwan or USA website. Even under a different model name, there are no VIA P4 chipset boards listed by Biostar. Maybe its one of those boards Biostar isn't 'supposed' to be advertising because of the VIA P4 infringement lawsuit thing?

Looks like a killer board for $54.00, though, but not if they won't support it.
