Should firmware updates on various devices ever be ran as NON-dedicated tasks, i.e. for instance should firmware update parameter/setting on an Internet router/modem be set to check for and apply firmware updates on an automated basis or should those updates always be done on a NON-automated/manual basis when NO OTHER applications (other than resident tasks) are running on the system ?

Thanks.

I prefer manual updates w/ a notification there's an update available. This is especially true with consumer gear.

If you want to use extra caution a good idea would be a reboot prior to applying the update to clear the resources being used from the device.

Personally I got sick of all of the junk updates from OEMs and went DIY instead and use Linux instead. I've been running it for several years now and only encountered a couple of rollback situations where a kernel didn't work with my specific NIC.

Most of the time though doing an update doesn't require precautions to work effectively though. However, OEM releases sometimes have issues that might show up days later as seen on forums. Usually best to let others be the guinea pigs for a week after a new release before applying it to your system.
