Any point in using a Dual-Link DVI adapter with non-multimode DisplayPort?

Having a bit of an issue lately with a 30" 2560x1600 monitor I purchased. I have a Dell XPS 1640 laptop with a Mobility Radeon HD3670 GPU. I had been told by sales reps (which I should have taken with a grain of salt) that my laptop would be able to drive the 2560x1600 resolution. Upon trying out the configuration, I am not at all able to run it anywhere close to that. Spending 4 hours with it yesterday, I was able to get it to run at a max of 1600x1200, however can't even replicate this today. If switching the display to 70Hz I can get it to run at 1024x768, so I really have no idea what is going on.

I have it connected via DisplayPort, and after searching through forum posts I have come across other people saying that the DisplayPort in the XPS16 is not multi-mode. I don't know much about display technology, but would there be any point in purchasing a DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI active adapter? I'm not sure if this would even be compatible since it's not multi-mode DP. Anyone have an idea? I know there are also other possible alternatives like a ViDock Box but I haven't explored that yet.
