I installed a new bathroom sink and everything works fine except for the trap. It is leaking at all the joints. I have tried tightening them al little at a time testing each time until I can't turn them any more with the wrench. The drain and the trap are all new and the trap is chromed brass. I don't want to use pvc because the pedestal base of the sink is polished stainless. Are there any trick to getting them to stop leaking?

Pipe joint compound. There's a paste you can put around the threads that will stop it from leaking.

A chrome P-trap... did you use rubber sealing rings?

If there were none, try out some thread tape over the threads.

You may actually need flat rubber washers, instead of the normal nylon compression type. Depends how the trap was designed. If it does require the compression type, did you turn the beveled edge away from the nut (nut spins on the flat side), so it seats correctly. Use brand new ones while you're at it. Don't over tighten, it will distort the seal. No dope or teflon tape will be needed, except in the fine threads going into the bottom of the pop-up assembly.

The nuts came with the rubber seals. They are flat on both sides. Everything is brand new.

The thing that sucks about that type of seal, is that it has to seal on both faces of the washer AND the inside edge (center of the donut). If it doesn't seal on that inner edge, it will seep through the gap. Here they mention using "plumber's grease" on the washer. All in an effort to keep from distorting it. Vaseline or any grease would do the same. I'm afraid the ones you're using now may be screwed up. Buy a bunch of new ones before you try again. Don't forget the pipe dope on the fine threads of the tail piece, that goes in the bottom of the pop-up.

I forgot to mention, just lightly hand tighten each part till it's all assembled, making sure each piece is lined up straight and square. Then tighten 'em all as much as you can by hand. Turn on the water, and tighten with a wrench just till the leaking stops. Hand tightening should almost be enough to do it.

Newegg still rocks!

NewEgg is fine. I'm still lining their pockets as much as anybody else.

Can't thank you enough for the tips. I took everything apart and put that washer in the correct place. Used vasoline on all the washers and hand tightened everything. Gave all the nuts a half turn more with the wrench, turned the water on and no leaks on the first try! Time to install the shelves.
