Any plumbers here?

Ok, here is the deal. I have been having problems with my plumbing in my bathroom. The problem started with this. Every time I used the shower the toilet would "bubble". This was annoying but no real big deal. Now the toilet won't flush and the shower drains REALLY slow. I used some of the Drano foaming cleaner and the shower seems to drain right now, but the bubbling has gotten worse and the toilet still won't flush.

Everything that I have read on the net points to it being a clogged vent line. Has anyone got any other ideas to try before I climb up on my roof? I REALLLYYYY don't like heights and hate the thought of going up there. When I get up there, how am I supposed to clean it out? I would appreciate anyone's input! Thanks in advance.

A plugged vent was my first guess as well.

You will need a snake if the vent is plugged, unless the plug is right a the end of the vent.

Woah woah...I'm no plumber but...a vent on your ROOF is causing problems with the toilet??? That makes no sense at all to me. Someone please explain.

I had a problem like that a few months ago.. I would run this sink and water would raise in the tub. Had to clean out a drain line that both shared in the basement - which required removing one of those cleaning caps.

Buy one of those $25 mechanical 25 foot snakes that can attach to a power drill and snake out your line. Its definitely better than spending $10 on drano and pouring it down your pipes.

All interior plumbing needs to vent air to work.

EDIT Scroll down to the Drain waste vent system section.

Really...I've never seen them hooked up like that but hey...I'm more familiar with framing, finishing and electrical than plumbing though.

Might as well drag a hose up there while you're going. Take a flashlight too. Maybe you can see something obvious. Maybe filling it with water will be enough pressure to flush it out... maybe not. Worth a try and it's free!

I doubt this is a vent problem, your waste line is probably clogged. Have you used a plunger on the toilet? If that does not help, snake it.

I didn't know till I bought this house. 🙂 This house actually has three vents. One on the side of the house, one on the roof and one on the back of the house. Check out the link that I edited in my other post for a better description.

A hose nozzle can "snake" through stuff gravity alone won't.

Drag that hose up there, drop it down the vent as far as possible and have somebody below turn it on. You can control it by pinching the hose and releasing it a few times. If water starts coming up the vent, you may want to bail on that idea, or you could end up bailing the bathroom. Watch for water coming out of the sink vents. Be ready to plug them with a towl if you have to. That can be the guy on the ground's job.
