so how difficult is this? What are the risks? And how much would someone usually charge for such a conversion. The bathroom just has a tub. thanks

Bump from another curious party (that just bought a house that needs the bathroom completely redone).

My father is a plumber and probably would know more but if I recall correctly it's probably just a matter of getting a contractor in there and having them install it. I'm assuming you have an old tub, that isn't set into a bathroom wall and doesn't have a shower in it. If so it's not cheap but it can certainly be done.

Well, the expensive part will be paying a plumber to run pipe up to where the shower head will be. I have seen cheap work arounds that attach a flexible house to the bath faucet which then runs up to the shower height. As far as the tub. I assume you can install a shower curtain bar and curtain to keep water in the tub. If you need to also protect the walls around the tub then you can buy flashing or even a cheap shower/bath module at your local Home Depot-LIKE store. Flashing would be cheapest, and the cheapest module would run about 250 bucks I guess.

I'm not a plumber, but you should easily be able to shut off the water coming into your house. then, after removing the necessary sheetrock, you should be able to take a pipe wrench, a few other materials, and reroute the water pipe yourself. Depending on where you live you might not even need it to get inspected. If you do, just call the permit office and see what the requirements are. Check out diynet.com, they probably have an outline of what you need to do.
