Any plugins or add-ons to give more functionality to Gimp text editing?

By default Gimp's text editing capabilities arn't any better than MS paint. Can't do any fancy effects not even outlines, not to mention the font selection is next to none. 10,000 fonts, and they practically all look the same.

Is there any kind of add on pack or something I can install to get more options?

I want to try to stop having to rely on Windows/Photoshop for stuff like this.

To do font effects in GIMP you have to get creative.

GIMP uses the fonts that are on your system.

Just figured out I could actually grab all the windows font and copy them to the fonts folder, did not figure they'd use the same file format. Also discovered I actually can scroll through the fonts in gimp if I use wheel up while hovering over the example letter. That makes things easier.

So no ways to get effects like in photoshop though? I can do it manually but then I have to start over if I decide to change the text. I guess I'll have to live with that, I don't really do websites that often anymore anyway.

GIMP does need help in the font department. Unfortunately, a lot of work is required and no where enough manpower (only three people work on it last I knew.)
