Any Plan B for DirecTV installation?

So, the typical installation is out cuz of the topic summary. I live in a condo where you can't install anything (urban acne...what bull$hit) on the roof, so do I have any other options? The install guy said he'd install some custom pole for $350, but I didn't reallly trust him. I live on the top floor.

Why doesn't DirecTV just put a satellite in the NE side too? or just all over? egads

The answer has to do with the physics of geosynchronous and geostationary orbits. It's not quite so simple as just plunking another satellite in orbit.

Anyway, if you have a balcony, you can make a mast out of a pole in a bucket of cement.

I concur- 5-gallon bucket, bag of concrete, some 3" antenna mast and bingo, you have a non-permanent, no building permit required dish mount point. Popular with apartment/condo inmates.

Dish network has an option. They have an alternate sat that is off to the far southwest. It doesn't receive all of the stations, but if no cable is available and you have no other option...

They already use 6 satellites just to provide the current content and are adding 4 more to offer 1,650 HD channels.

Is there is a business case to launch 10 more just to offer the same content to people who can not access the current system? I doubt it.

It's not even a business case, it's simply physics. If you're in North America, you can't look north and "see" a satellite that is orbiting near the equator.
