So like the title suggests anyone here use a pipe? I recently purchased a Dr.Grabow pipe and need some suggestions for a nice mellow tobacco.

For reference I smoke Camel blues and am looking for something similar mellow wise but with maybe a little more flavor and aroma.

I realize this is a touchy subject so I'm not looking for the you're killing yourself posts but just honest answers from people with similar interests.

Haven't smoked a pipe in a long time, and tobacco shops are pretty much done. You'd do best finding a shop, and chatting up the proprietor. Otherwise, Danish tobaccos are generally mellow, but tend to be very moist.

Thanks for the advice. I have a couple tobacco shops pretty close to me and I plan on hitting them up to see what they have. I'll keep an eye out for Danish blends.

in 1973 , I used Bourgham Riff , very mellow . But pipes , like cigars and cigarettes tend to make my breath smell bad , and make my teeth yellow , so I quit tobacco in 1984 .

I've only tried a few aromatic blends, but Lane Limited 1-Q may be my favorite so far. Smells great, doesn't burn too hot and has a light sweetness.

I see Prince Albert and Bourgham Riff recommend above, and while those are certainly good in a pinch, I much prefer the stuff available online. Check out www.tobaccoreviews.com for a good source of pipe tobacco reviews.

I found that cheap $5 corn cob pipes smoke just as well, if not better, than the expensive briar pipes that I've purchased. It's a refreshing change from other hobbies where going deeper into it causes you to spend exorbitant amounts of money.

I got some samples 5-6 kinds per can from online store for resonable $$$.

Some of them are truly awesome with nothing in B&M store that can match.

Dunhill Nightcap is my favorite now.

Between 1964 and 1990, our society has seen a huge advance in longevity. That's a direct result of the release of the 1964 Surgeon General Report on Smoking. Many people got the message and quit, which is why longevity has gone up so much. You asked for advice. Mine is to toss the pipe and live healthier and longer. I believe in individual rights and self-determination. If you want to kill yourself in the face of overwhelming evidence that tobacco usage causes cancer, heart and pulmonary disease, I believe you have the right to do so.

January 11, 2014 marked the 50th anniversary of the first Surgeon General’s Report on Smoking and Health. The 1964 landmark report, released by Surgeon General Dr. Luther Terry, was the first federal government report linking smoking and ill health, including lung cancer and heart disease. This scientifically rigorous report laid the foundation for tobacco control efforts in the United States. In the last 50 years, we have increased our understanding of the devastating health and financial burdens caused by tobacco use. We now know that smoking causes a host of cancers and other illnesses and is still the leading preventable cause of death in the United States, killing 480,000 people each year.

I gave up the pipe, currently on ecigs, but my health insurance is going to be charging a big monthly charge for ecig users, so I'll be switching to nicotine patches Jan 1.

I loved most 'natural' burley smokes. Aromatics smelled nice but smoked kinda meh. English style with all the latakia is quite strong and potent, I enjoyed, but not all the time. Dunhill made the best english blends IMO.

Sir Walter Raleigh regular was my "go to smoke" that I always loved since first puff.

I did find some blends by Petersons, Davidoff, Peter Stokkebye, Cornel & Diehl, and of course Mac Baren which I could easily have fallen in love with as well.

pipe tobacco has WAY more flavor than any cigarette you will ever smoke, so don't worry about that now.

my personal recommendation would be to start with a tin of Rattray's 3 Noggins Full. this is imho the best classic english mixture and represents what the typical pipe should smoke like.

after that, i recommend you simply buy different types of tobacco and make your own mixes, on the fly. i've always modified my smoke, heavier as the day goes longer.

i would first of all get a tin of Latakia tobacco; this is the strongest flavor of all tobaccos and it's present in almost every classic blend, with the amount present determining how intense the flavor is. You should get an idea of how much latakia infulences your smoke, just to figure out what you want from the pipe.

You will of course need some virginia, i suggest Hal'O'The'Wynd (Rattray). My fav mixing brand is Torben Dansk (awesome latakia)
tabak-torben-dansk-latakia-cypern.jpg

so get yourself a set of virginia, latakia, burley, cavendish, kentucky (super strong but amazing), and perique.

again, i recommend you stick with rattray's and torben dansk. imho, they have the best tobacco on teh market, atm (and excluding impossibly expensive brands).

ofc a nice tin of Nightcap (Dunhill) is always nice to have.

Wow a little overwhelming...I didn't think there was so much too pipe tobacco.

I think I will try the Dunhill Nightcap. I see several of you guys recommended it, it gets good reviews, and I remember smoking Dunhill cigarettes on my trips to Europe and they were nice.

Even if the nightcap isn't my cup of tea it's gotta be better than the Tin Star I got from the gas station...haha. Thanks for all the advice guys much appreciated.

Well, Nightcap is nice, but it is quite strong. Maybe you could start with the similar, but slightly lighter Early Morning Pipe.
Anyway, don't stop there. personal blending is where it's at.
