I'm looking at pipes. What all do I need to start? Is it difficult to learn? Everywhere I've seen on the web talks about how hard it is...

The OP is very serious. I have feelings that this thread is not going to be very serious.

Agreed. Yoga is also helpful in controlling breathing and suppressing the body's natural reaction to foreign material in the throat.

Assuming you're talking about tobacco pipes...

Well what kind of pipe are you talking here? Filter? Non-filter?

The best advice I can give you off the top of my head is use matches.

Go to talk to someone at a tobacco shop. Don't use lighters unless you light some spanish cedar and use it to light your tobacco. I'd start off with a cheap corn cob pipe to see if it's for you. When I pack, I fill the pipe up loosely, pack it half way with a czech tool. fill it up loosely again, pack till about 3/4. fill it up to the top and pat down with my thumb. light (not cheapass lighter), draw into your mouth, repeat, and enjoy. you'll end up having to keep lighting it several times until you get your packing down.

Don't be afraid to take it all in.

This isn't going anywhere fast! OP, you might want to find a forum dedicated to pipes via Google, you're probably not going to find much here.

i used to smoke a pipe when i was in college. used a tobacco called "grandmas apple pie"
i bought a cheap pipe from walgreens or jewel osco or something though...nothing expensive

and i bought a zippo that was made for a pipe...still have it too, but i haven't smoked in years.

my advice - smoke in the privacy of your own home
