on a related note, do any photographers out there have experience asking random people to have their pictures taken?

i saw some late night groups sitting at outdoor cafes and thought they'd make good pictures. i didn't want to just walk up to them and snap away, but was too embarassed to ask them 😛

on the average are people apprehensive? do they look at you like you're a psycho? or do people usually oblige?

I have asked a few times and they all pose. It is much better to snap away quickly because you then will get natural shots.
Unless they are childrens, then you might want to get permission from the parents. Asking girls (they are braver in group) will almost always get the pose shots, but it is a good way to strike a conversation and get their adress/phone number (an excuse to send them a copy of the pics).

I do it everyday as part of my job. It's a little awkward at first, and still is sometimes, but when I've got my camera belt on with 6K worth of gear, I look like a SWAT team member, and combined with my press credientials hanging around my neck people usually are pretty nice. In general I try not to ask first; many people get embarrassed or you wont get that candid feeling that was there previously. Sometimes I will, especially if there are kids involved. I've learned very quickly parents are very paranoid about photographers.
