Are there any photographers in AT? I was wondering because I have a few questions and was just generally interested to see if there were any amatuer or professional photographers in here.

My question is ...is there a reference where you can get an idea how much to charge people for doing jobs? Anyone know what professionals charge for a shoot? I am going to start a photography service here in my town to try to make some money. I love photography and am willing to do pro bono work to get a name going for myself.

Do a Google search for photograpers, and ask them for a quote :) Or find a site that lists pricing information.

I'm in Ohio. There is only one professional photography in Marion and he stays mainly in Columbus. Lew Lause lives in Marion once in a while but I don't know if he would enjoy an apprentice.

I tried a Google search but maybe I didnt look hard enough... You know how it gets late into the night and you sorta lose your brain!

Two resources you need:

PPO Website - http://www.ppofohio.org/index.htm
Try to attend their convention in March and make sure to meet as many people as you can and if there are any speakers or workshops for beginners, attend. Eventually if you become a professional photographer on even a part-time basis, this group will help you get a jump-start, make excellent contacts in the business (the best photographer is very little without a good photo lab behind him, and the trade show and word of mouth are a great way to get started finding a lab).

PPA Website - http://www.ppa.com/
Not as much a priority right now, but there are many benefits to participating in the PPA, including nationally-standardized degree programs. Once you meet more professionals in your area, talk to them about the PPA. If possible, sign up for newsletters in the meantime to get a feel for the organization and what it is involved in.

That's the idea. Im taking professional photgraphy classes at school, but im transferring soon, so i wont get to finish the whole course. But it's intense and it's a cut throat market for photographers. Do you have an area of expertise? What were you gonna aim for? Scenery, ads, portraits?

Go find a company, carry the bags as an apprentice and move up. That's what i've been told, but you can just start out as the fish and swim upstream.

I dont really have an area I want to concentrate on. I guess I just dont want to limit myself. There are 2 "professional" photographers around her that do commercial Hughes and another one and they mainly focus on portraiture and senior pics. I would not want to do that but if someone paid me I would. So far the free work I have been doing to get a name for myself going is album cover work. I am also into Photoshop a bit..I want to incorporate that into my photography also. I just did a new bands album shoot today while they were finishing up drum tracks at my friends house. See ..I figured if I offer prices about half of what "professional" charge I would get some people coming to me for photos. Then they would spread the word by mouth ..and hopefully people would come to me for quality, value pics. Then as I "move up" I could charge more...and hopefully get my own studio going. The band I did today..their lead singer was talking to me and he said he knows someone that has just got out of photography and has a whole house set up for such a thing. I figured if I could rent darkroom time per month or make a work room and pay him..that would be very helpful.
