I am browsing newegg and the only processors with turbo core tech are X6 processors. If I want to be cheap and get a X4 are any models capable of turbo core?

All the X4s are Deneb which means no turbo core.

Not like you need it. Most X4 965s will do 4.0GHz out of the box on the stock cooler. Flip the multiplier and be done with it.

Edit: Well, according to Wikipedia there is the Phenom II X4 960T which is Zosma... which is Thuban with two cores disabled and does have turbo core. I guess this just came out?

That is right. AMD did release Thuban chip with 2 cores disabled, but this is not for retail sale unfortunately. :\

If you're getting AMD, personally I think you should either go cheap with an Athlon II or just get Thuban. Thubans turbo and they overclock more, and you get the two extra cores.

I've created my own "turbo core" of sorts by using K10STAT. My computer runs at 1000mhz 99% of the time while it's idle. K10STAT then throttles the CPU speed dynamically depending on the load. Under full load I run my X4 at 3.8ghz. Under moderate load it's usually between 2 and 3ghz, with voltages to suit.

I'm pretty sure my CPU uses around 4 watts at idle as I think I have it at only 0.7v.

Turbo means disabling some cores and overclocking others. It isn't turbo when all the cores are running at the same speed.

0.7v is nice though. I never bothered to go below .85. What clockspeed is that at?

Yes thats true, but I've taken it a few steps further. K10stat allows you to make core run at different speeds according to their load.

I'm running my cpu at 500MHz at idle and each core can ramp up to 1600MHz, 2700MHz, or 3800MHz independently. My voltage isn't optimized like SickBeast yet, but I know I can prime95 for a day at 400MHz with .685v.

The only problem is that K10stat won't push my speed up to 3800 after my computer comes out of sleep.

Well, IMO you might gain an extra 200mhz on those few cores that way, but whatever gains you make you will lose back by not having those cores to run basic Windows processes in the background.

I'm not a big fan of turbo core.

Right now is a horrible time to buy a CPU. There's too much coming out right around the corner.

It actually turns out it's 600mhz at 0.8v. Sorry about that; I set it ages ago and I guess it was wishful thinking on my part. :)

I seem to remember having it running fine at 0.75v, but below that I don't think I could do much. I'm pretty sure I could get it up to 800-1000mhz at 0.8v as well. I just don't see the need, and it would use up a few more watts that way anyhow.

AMD prices are cheap enough but i am planning to wait for the bobcat stuff so these prices go down even more but my PC died when the original AM3 CPU's came out and I want to get faster than my Phenom II X4 810 Deneb 2.6GHz.

thanks for the help everyone.

I was reading on Tom's today how the Core i3-2100 will cost $135 and spank the pants off of Phenom II X4 925 so maybe i can get a Phenom II X4 970 or Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition for that price range once Intel releases their 2100.
