PDF is a presentation format, it's not meant to be edited which is why they all suck. If you want to do more than some minor edits like typing over text you should get the source, edit that and then produce a new PDF from that.

Never done it free - currently, NitroPDF 8 is my primary PDF tool. I do support Nothinman's premise - all PDF files start out as a document from some other source, i.e., Word, WordPerfect, etc. They create the PDF using PDF formatter as a printer. For real editing, revert the PDF to the source document.

I see, what a shame how only Adobe can edit PDFs

It's really not because, as I stated, it was designed as a final product/print format. I wouldn't be surprised if the new versions work better, but my employer had a license for a previous release of the full Adobe Acrobat and even that didn't edit them well. Minor changes like replacing of text with words of similar length were ok, but anything major that changed the flow of the document was problematic at best.

To make real edits that look good you need the original, it's that simple.

Never said that. The new version 8 of Nitro PDF is very good - but not free.

http://www.nitropdf.com/

It has a new ribbon control bar that has one button reversion to Word or WordPerfect. That's where the serious editing is done - even with Acrobat Pro.

Last time I was in Dubai, I was impressed by the gold bars for sale in the airport. What's another arm and leg! :)
