I loved the stealthiness of MGS on playstation, it is the only reason I got MGS PS3 bundle back when MGS4 came out instead of XBOX. Also because most xbox games are also on PC and I used to be a PC gamer to the core more than a few years ago. I just updated my computer to be able to handle todays games and was wondering if there were any games similar to the metal gear series for PC?

Thanks guys

if you want something current that is "Stealth action", then Splinter Cell is probably closest to MGS games. Deus Ex:HR is also a good current choice. Skyrim also has some "Stealth" elements, as does Kingdoms of Amalur. Thief is a "Stealth" game but it is MUCH older and probably won't compare to todays games if you upgraded your PC "To play current games".

I say upgraded to play current games, but I really haven't played any pc games for the last 5 or 6 years, so anything within that timeframe wwould be new to me. I think the last two pc games I played were half life episode 1 and 2

edit: also thanks for the suggestions guys, ill be sure to check them out

before I got MSG4 i replayed mgs1,2,3, which I figured would be good because they somehwat follow a story. Is that something you'd recommend for the deus ex series?

I actually never played the older Deus ex games, and I purchased the new one and I dont think I missed out on anything. I'm a big MGS fan too, I think you'll really like Deus ex

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines has a fair amount of stealth, if you like the idea of being a vampire in modern Southern California. Guns, melee, hacking, stealth and the undead.

Sneaking up behind someone and shoving a katana through their chest never gets old :)

Deus Ex is only three games. The original was very good. 'invisible war' wasn't well received (and i never played so I can't comment). 'Human revolution' is the most recent installment and got mixed reviews (mainly inconsistent difficulty and balancing issues). As for needing the back story, I would say no. Picking up with HR, you will not lose anything for not having played the older games (IMHO).

Not that I am trying to point you away from Deus Ex, but you should really check out some of the more recent Splinter Cell games first. I think you will find it much more 'in the vein' of the MGS games at least as far as the stealth action you were looking for. There is lots of sneaking around, stealth kills and generally lots of sneaky spy action.

One other thing. Both Deus Ex:HR and Vampire the masquerade (and Skyrim and Amalur) are more in the line of RPG type games. They all have stealth behavior and sneaking around, but are more about building a character (who might be a stealth person, but might not) rather than a full stealth engine like Splinter Cell or The Thief series.

Just my opinion.

If you do end up trying Skyrim particularly (but really any of the RPG games mentioned) and find you like the RPG (with stealth component) you might want to check out Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas. Post apocalyptic goodness with lots of abandon buildings and subway tunnels to sneak through and shoot mutants in.

Then definitely Splinter Cell over Deus Ex (at least initially). Try em both out, but Splinter Cell is closer to a shooter than any RPG is.

The entire Splinter Cell series, especially Chaos Theory, are amazing. Aside from the last two, they simply blow MGS out of the water. I could never get into MGS because of the goofy as hell characters and story. Splinter Cell has that excellent Tom Clancy touch that makes it feel realistic and akin to playing a movie.

Also, the entire Thief series bascially gave birth (or at least, rebirth) to the "sneak" genre, and also creates a world and atmosphere better than what is found in most any game today.

Should I play through the entire series in order, the way I did for MGS?

Roll a rogue! Wow is nothing like metal gear but PvP rogue is good fun and stealthy if that's your thing.

If you don't mind old graphics, Thief 2 is by far the finest first person stealth game ever made. While I liked Splinter Cell and Deus Ex HR, they both have the problem that made Deus Ex 2 (and Thief Invisible Suckage) the steaming pile of poop it is - alot of rat maze maps with reused geometry (ie the console nerf). I replay Thief 2 yearly, and love it every time.

Which reminds me, I want that grab a treasure sound from Thief 2 for my cellphone ring. :p

My one and only complaint about Thief series in general is that it is TOTALLY stealth based. Once you got spotted, you were dead unless you got REALLY lucky. Combat basically felt like you were fighting with your water arrows rather than with any kind of real weapon.

Don't get me wrong, it was a great series... Just a bit far end of the spectrum as far as my tastes were concerned.

Deux Ex 3 : Human Revolution is actually a prequel to the previous 2, you could start with that one.

If you care about the over-arching story of Sam Fisher and, more specifically, the character progression, I suppose. But each game is largely its own self-contained world and plot.

However, be warned. The first game came out right out the launch of the original Xbox in 2001 (I only remember because I got it and Halo with it for the Xbox that Christmas), so it's going to look dated.

Personally, if I were you, I'd start with Chaos Theory. It's largely considered the best in the series, and still looks excellent. If you like it, then give the others a go. But don't be too hung up on story. These aren't like Mass Effect or other real story driven games.
