Universal Upgrade? Read on and it will all be VERY familiar. To those not in IT, this is the complete truth.

Windogg: By the end of the year we should phase out all early Pentium systems. Their components are obsolete and cannot handle the latest software and operating systems available on the market. A cost-benefit analysis will show faster systems could acheive payback in less than 6 months due to increased productivity and reduced costs of support.
Manager: Can't we just upgrade the memory?

Windogg: I would not run Adobe Photoshop 6.0 on that Toshiba 3110 notebook. The Pentium II 266 will be major bottleneck in terms of performance. In addition, the Trident video adapter and memory can only handle screen resolutions of 800x600 at 256 color and not the 32 bit color that is required for accurate representation of colors. Even if that was adequate, the screen is much too small to be useful.
Manager: Can't we just upgrade the memory?

Windogg: Due to the Americans With Disabilites act I highly recommend upgrading the older monitors to larger models. As time goes on, the degraded color and low refresh rate can lead to eyestrain, headaches, and fatique. This in turn will raise the cost of health care as well as lead to increased absenteism due to illness. The cost of upgrade will not only lead to financial gains but increased employee morale will help retain expereince people and thus save on training and orientation.
Manager: Can't we just upgrade the memory?

Windogg: The laptop got dropped down 8 fights of stairs, run over by truck, and dragged through a pond of raw sewage. It'll never run again.
Manager: Can't we just upgrade the memory?

Windogg: <<bad dubbing>> OMG!!! IT'S GODZILLA!! WE MUST FLEE THE CITY!!!
Manager: Can't we just upgrade the memory?

People think that just upgrading the amount of memory will make a Pentium run like a P-3.

there are also managers that think the opposite.. we have some computers here that I want to stick more ram in but my manager says that it must be the processor that is slowing it down... he wants to keep the 32 and 64mb systems and put in like 1ghz p3s...

Then you know what's gonna happen:

Windogg: Our server is running a pentium 3, 1 ghz processor with only 128 megs of ram, we need at least 256 to be efficient, and preferably 512 to handle the intense loads.
Manager: Can't we just upgrade the floppy drive?

You gotta give him a little credit, I mean a memory upgrade usually is the most efficient upgrade. Still a funny rant tho. :D

hehe

Speaking of memory I'm on a p2 350 right now with 384 megs. The P3 1.1 they ordered will be in soon though!

haha sounds familiar.
What gets me is, when the secretary, who does not even know how to use Office, gets the new 933 w/ 256 and the chemical engineers are stuck with IBM p-100's to do mission critical number crunching, and their boss will not justify getting them new pc's. What a joke.
Glad I am an IT guy who gets the good stuff first. even if it is just to play Q3 while working nights. SHHHHHH:)
