I just booked cheap flight from www.google.com/flights but don't know if it'll help much being last min. Cheap being relative of course, flights are getting damn expensive

I think I remember reading on web that airlines release their deals for the week sometime really late Tuesday evening / Wednesday morning, so if you are up then, check search engines or call airlines directly.

Sounds like airlines as a whole have, at least for now, gotten control of capacity, and have some pricing power in this market.

Did you try to bid on Priceline or just look at their listings.

As you are finding out, last minute flights allow them to hold you hostage on price unless you wait until last hour before flight before booking. Then you might gave a chance, the airlines do not want to fly with a non-revenue generating seat.
