So my company is trying to hire at least two people, probably 3 or 4, for immediate hire. We did the post on Monster and Dice, and am trying to get my boss to post on some more of the pay sites. I posted in the job thread here, but got nothing. Looking for some more places to post a listing...

Are there really no programmers looking for work in the Detroit area? I mean really, did they all leave state or something?

A few years ago if we made a posting we'd get hundreds of resumes, today we get maybe 5, and they all flunk the interview hard core. Is this just a result of doing business in the business hating state of Michigan?

All my fellow CS majors plan on leaving the state once they are done with school, unless they end up with a job with Tech Smith or one of the other few software companies around here.

What do you guys do?

We do websites and desktop apps, heavy on the .Net side. We are pretty graphics heavy too, but you dont need to be a graphics expert to code here. We're also looking for a SQL DBA, because our last one sucked. And we'll even take non coders if your decent with website design, especially with anything like flash or silverlight.

Which college do you go to ?

We hired a guy from MSU last August, he looked great on paper, but he washed after the first day. He had no idea how to use visual studio, or SQL Management Studio, or even how to access a network file share. I hope you guys are better than that?

Hehe, I hope so. Although, the only reason why I know Visual Studio (beyond C++ a few years ago) is because I want to learn C#, however, C#/Visual Studio is not a requirement for any CS grad at MSU. Many choose to use Java as their main programming language in the upper level classes.

But he did have C# on his resume, therefore I figured he would at least been exposed via the free version. And it wasnt like he just didnt know VS, it was more like he wasnt exposed to any IDE period, Java or whatever. But giving him a pass on that... getting totally lost when I told him to grab the spec off a fileshare was another big blunder.

try networking through linkedin. While my new job I just started didn't come through linkedin, more and more recruiters were using it to contact me.

Dude you'd be surprised... I work in NYC and although we get a decent number of resumes (maybe like 20 or so a week) 95% plain suck and have no business being near a computer.
