Any other considerations but Plextor?

I was going to order a Plextor 12X IDE burn proof this weekend and was wondering if there are any other alternatives I should consider. I heard that there is a 16X drive out there (Yamaha?) but really want burn proof technology. Anyway, been about 6 months since I upgraded my CDRW and all I have been reading is kudos for the Plextor 12X. Just one final check with the gurus before I pull the trigger.

Let me know.

I like the yamaha's for the price performance ratio. But if you do alot of burning you should go plextor, they are the best.

You might want to check out the TDK, plextor makes them AFAIK (they have burnproof at any rate) and they are probably alot cheaper.

If you get a SCSI drive you in a sense have "burn proof" technology. 🙂

The only advantage BURNProof has over SCSI is the ability to stop if Winblows crashes (or you accidentally press CTRL+ALT+DEL once), then resume when and if you recover.

But Plextor can't be beaten in a popularity contest. They've really earned their pristine reputation.

I just got Plextor SCSI Burnproof and this thing rawks. I use some cheap ass media and it has no problem burning at 12x. The only gripe is there's still some software that doesn't support it yet.

Found the Yamaha here but no burnproof. Someone above said Plextor may make TDK drives also here but no mention of burnproof. I'll do some more digging. I linked to BestBuy because I happen to have 2 $40 gift cards, so the price of the Plextor, Yamaha and TDK will all be in the same ballpark.

Probably going to go with the Plextor.

OK - done some research on the TDK and Plextor and the specs look the same except the TDK has a 4MB buffer vs. 2MB for the Plextor. The TDK does have "write assurance technology"(burnproof).

Anyone have the TDK drive? I guess the important question is can it copy just about anything in the world like the Plextor? If it weren't for the larger buffer, I would get the Plextor.

Yamaha 8MB Buffer - no burnproof
TDK 4MB Buffer w/burnproof
Plextor 2MB Buffer w/burnproof

I would reccomend going with plextor...
I have the 8x4x32 (4MB buffer)- and I think you don't need more speed nor the "burn proof" technology - even if you burn 10 CD's a day - but that is only my POV

I'm finally upgrading from my old Ricoh 2x2x6 for a Plextor 12x10x32 SCSI drive. Should be here Wed. and I can't wait....😀

I have heard that Plextor and TDK are the only ones currently offering drives with burn proof. I have heard that the TDK is fast and rips audio faster than any drive on the market right now. But since TDK is a baby to the drive business and hasnt been around the block like the other manufactors I would lean towards the Plextor due to their well deserved reputation.

heh, Ricoh has a kickass DVD/CDRW drive, that beats Plextors in most tests (exept I think audio extraction rate). it has Burnproof (they call it Justlink), 12X CDR, 10X CDRW and I think 8X DVD read..

you can also find it at about the same price as a Plextor 12X10X32 (because Plextor's brand name always comes at a price).

it's odd, how Ricoh seems to have left the CDRW business, and is now only in the DVD/CDRW business (doesn't bother me TOO much though, I'd like all my drives capable of reading DVDs!).

Yamaha's 16X10X40 drive has 8MB of buffer, and only runs on SCSI, Firewire, or something else (I don't remember). Yamaha is up there with Ricoh, and Plextor in terms of good quality drives.

never have you had so many choices to choose from. none of these drives will disappoint you.

Soccerman-- That Ricoh drive isn't SCSI by chance is it? I love the low CPU util. I get, especially since I'm using IDE RAID.😉 I'm planning on adding a 40x Plextor CD-ROM for the bit for bit copy feature anyway.

I ended up going with the TDK 12/10/32 with burnproof. From everything I have read, it is made by Plextor and is the same drive except it has a 4MB buffer and the Plextor only has a 2MB buffer. It is also 100% CDClone compatable and uses the same firmware (1.07).

Thanks for all your help. I also got an awesome deal on it too.

Check that. After further review of the TDK site, the drive does in fact have only a 2MB buffer, so since they are the same drive, I cancelled my TDK order with buy.com and ordered the Plextor.
