New Outage Hits Comcast Subscribers
By Ed Oswald, BetaNews
April 13, 2005, 12:48 AM

For the second time in less than a week, Comcast High Speed Internet customers found themselves without Internet service due to a nearly nationwide failure of it's domain name servers. According to posts on Comcast's own help forums, problems began shortly after 10:30pm Eastern Time Tuesday and quickly spread across the country over the next several hours.

BetaNews received reports of connection issues from Comcast subscribers in the Philadelphia, Detroit and San Francisco areas; however, according to user forums, there were reports of problems in several other areas across the country.

The latest round of problems were clearly upsetting customers. "Again no communication from Comcast regarding the outage, and their customers get the shaft again. Comcast has done nothing for me except to raise both my cable and Internet costs 4 times in the last two years," one customer wrote in Comcast's Support forum.

Others threatened to drop Comcast's service altogether. "It's getting to the point where I am seriously considering going back to SBC DSL for Internet," another angry customer wrote. "It wasn't as fast, but they didn't blatantly lie about what was going on the few times their service went down."

The user was referring to Comcast allegedly blaming the April 7 outage on a denial-of-service attack according to some customers who called and demanded an explanation from the company. Comcast did not give any official public reason as to what exactly the cause of the outage was, although moderators in the support forums denied that was the cause.

However, some said they understood that there would be problems. "Comcast has been really good for me historically," a Comcast subscriber from San Francisco who went by the name Marc told BetaNews. "I can forgive this issue."

If you go to those Comcast forums, its filled with whiners and endless bitching. If they don't like the service I don't why they stick with it. There was a thread in there about how internet connection was as valuable as food and water. lol.

I haven't had any downtime at all. I may have changed my DNS servers a while back so my connection hasn't been a problem.

Can anyone figure this out?

I get home today and Kaspersky shows that the anti-virus updates failed every single hour overnight and this morning, meaning my connection was probably down. I tried opening Trillian and IE and sure enough, no connection. So I disable and re-enable my connection in Network Connections and it's fine. But it's been doing this for the past few days, and all the time I've been attributing it to the nationwide problems. Mad that it happened yet AGAIN, I called Comcast and talked to a guy. He said the DNS problems are fine now since the last outage last night, and that he sees at his end a constant connection to my modem for the past 18 hours with no downtime at all. He said it could either be because, 1) I need to set it back to obtain the DNS address automatically, or 2) since it's only dropping when I'm away from the computer, that maybe XP is turning the NIC off itself when the computer's idle for awhile. So I check the Power Management tab of my NIC in Device Manager, and sure enough the option to let XP turn off the device when idle to save power is checked. I unchecked it of course, and also set DNS back to automatic.

But that option couldn't have checked ITSELF recently, I sure never checked it. And it's been fine and constant even while idle overnight forever. So wouldn't you think the problem was still on Comcast's end? Then again, the guy said my connection has been constant for the past 18 hours, meaning the loss of connectivity was on my end. So what was causing it, and how come the problem didn't exist a mere few days ago?

A friend of mine had the same problem with her system. It was on 24/7 for a long time with no issues, rebooted for critical updates and also monthly. It randomly started being completely unable to view any websites until she restarted the NIC. This lasted for about a week and a half. Comcast and Micrsoft passed the blame buck around a number of times. Then just as randomly, the problem disappeared and she's up for a month solid now.

Give it a week, it'll probably go away.

Well, good thing it went down for an hour tonight completely. :|

No TV signal, no internet signal, and I was the first in my area to call about it so they didn't have any clue what the problem was.

Tell me about it. Although it has been smooth since Friday, before then I the problems were rampant for 5 days and Comcast kept telling me it was on my end. I ripped my hair out and they convinced me it was my router.

I am still using Verizon's DNS. A little slower than what I am used to, but a lot better than what I was getting with Comcast. Please update this thread when everything is fixed so I can call in for a credit to my account.

Heh Seattle area... it doesn't go out as often. But when a lot of people go on, you get half of the 4 mbps or LESS. It sucks!
