Hey All,

I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I am buying a computer for my sister this christmas. She needs it for internet / light word processing only (she also watches a lot of videos so want to get a pretty large hard drive), she also has vision problems so I need the display to be nice for watching DVD's and looking at webpages. My price range is about 600 dollars. I was debating if I should just buy a Dell or put together a computer. I have a 19" Trinitron Screen that is pretty nice which is not being used. I also have an extra copy of windows XP pro lying around. If I was to put together a computer for her, I would probably upgrade my own and give her parts from mine as I dont think she will need higher than a pentium 4 2.8, which is what I am currently using. Do you guys think I should just buy the dell (now that expensive) or do you think I can make a decent computer from my parts and upgrade mine for under 600 (700 MAX).

Here is my comp specs now:
ATI AIW 9700 Pro
Pentium 4 2.8 GHZ
Gigabyte MOBO (dont remember exact model number)
1 GB RAM
DELL 2005W display
200 GB Western Digital
Hercules 7.1 Sound Card
NEC DVD Burned
------------------------
Extra parts:
19" CRT
Windows XP Pro (2)

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated as I need to order tonight so I can put it together before christmas.

Thanks a lot.

Do the dells, 15" flat planel displays, have a nice crisp quality / are clear / easy to look at? I am in the middle of pricing a Dell now, however, once you finally get the comp to your shopping cart the price goes from 500 to 734. The things about Dell I am worried about are: (1) Crappy display on the free 15" flat panel (2) Not stable. Any other opinions?

The problem with dell is that they come with a lot of bloat. Many people will reformat and reinstall. That requires a windows disc. The outlet computers have the os cd included. They are stable. I cant tell you the 15" screen though.

Im still trying to make a final decision. Whats getting me now is, I was planning to upgrade my comp within the next 6 months as I do a fair bit of movie editing / casual gameplay and the exporting / general use (using adobe premiere) seems to be taking forever these days, If I spend this money now on a Dell I won't have any money to upgrade with myself...is it even worth it at this point to get a new upper end mobo and processor (coming from a P42.53GHZ). I just dont know if I should buy her a completely new computer or use some of the money to upgrade mine and give her some of my parts...Thanks for the replies, any other opinions / advice would be appreciated.
