Hi, I want to buy an IBM Thinkpad R40.

I have got some questions on the screen... I cannot decide between 15" XGA and 15" SXGA+(1400x1050)...

Does anybody have a xga or sxga IBM thinkpad with 15 inch screen?

Thank you...

I have never had one of those but I think that those high-resolutions on a 15" screen would be hard to read because of the text being so small.

Thanks... any other opinions? I have heard many people saying sxga is a must on 15" screens, that is why I ask, also the price difference!!!

1400x1050 is great on a 15in. if you go for 1024x768 on and 15in everything will be too big.
1600x1200 on a 15in might be pushing it a little, but even that is workable if your eyesight is good.

1024x768 looks best on a 12in or less.

So you tell me to go with sxga, right? I am still not really sure, since I haven't seen any... But I am tending to go with the R40 with the xga, since it is much cheaper..

My laptop has a 14.1" SXGA+ screen, and I think the resolution is perfect for this screen size. I also have a 15" LCD panel with XGA and I find it's resolution to be too low.

Personally I would get the SXGA+ screen, but text may look to small for some people.

To find out what resolution would be best for you we can compare the DPI to that of your current monitor. What kind of monitor do you have and what resolutoin do you run it at?

I have an R40 with 15" SXGA+ 1400x1050.

I wasn't used to this at all, because I've always used my monitors at 1024x768. However, now that I'm used to it. I find that lower resolution monitors look terrible, and you don't get enough desktop space.

It took me a week to get used to it, but afterwards I'm fine. Also there is a nice keyboard zoom shortcut, in case you need to read something that is very small.

The monitor itself is decent, while the viewing angle is a bit limited. I also had to adjust some of the display settings to get the screen right. The default settings don't seem to be as bright as crisp as it should be, but after a little adjustment, it is great.

Goodluck

Thanks for all the replies, at the moment I run a 17 CRT at 1024x768 (Flatron 775FT), and I find it works fairly well...

So if I had that much of a desktop on the laptop it would be great...

Thanks for all your replies....

So I might get the more expencive one...

Another thing, the lower resolution runs more economical, about 1 hour more battery life...

Actually one more reason to stick to a 350? cheaper notebook...

1350 versus 1700
1.3 vs. 1.4 (don't care)
xga vs. sxga (???)
256 vs. 512 (would be nice)
6.1h vs. 5h (definitely 6h)

man it is not easy, but the price seems the most tending fact..

Anyway, this laptop is not for me, it is for my sister, for university... mainly internet and office applications (so sxga would be good), no gaming...

get the least amount of ram possible. theres plenty of places to buy ram for MUCH cheaper than the vendor of the notebook. perhaps www.crucial.com.

if i were you, i would get sxga+ because you never know when it will come in handy. but, if the cost is too dire, just stick with xga.

For a 15" definately go sxga+. But if you do decide on the xga why not just get the 14" model. As a bonus the laptop will be a little bit smaller (and should be cheaper too).

go to a computer store and compare them for yourself. Personally, I think that 1400 @ 15" is to small. I like 1024 @ 14"

I am currently demoing the Compaq Evo N800w and it has a 15 inch screen. The resolution that it runs at is 1600 * 1200 and I love it. I can't get over how crisp and bright this screen is. I would definately spend the extra money on the higher resolution. with this res, I can run multiple things on the screen at once and its great. too bad I have to return this laptop. Mind you, I should be getting my T41 in a week and a half ;)

I've got a 14.1" screen @ 1400x1050. 1024x768 just doesn't look right, it's too big, not enough showing on the display. I would definately go for the higher resolution screen, it is SO much nicer!

However, I recommend you go to a retail store and find laptops with different resolution screens, and have a look at them, and see which you prefer.

Today I compared SXGA, to XGA, and found XGA a lot nicer, but still found that the extra money is not worth it for me individually... Thank you anyway....
