You might want to check this thread. Or you could try posting in the Software for Windows forum, might have more luck.

What you are looking for is a program using the ghostscript system (invented to save trees :p). It reads post script (printer language) and then displays it. In this case you want a program that takes the post script, and "prints" it to a PDF document.

PDF 995 does just that. It installs as a "printer" along with your other printers. Anytime you want to make a PDF, just select print and select the PDF "printer" and it will create the PDF file.

As for file cabinet storage, I'm afraid I can't help you there. sorry. ^_^*

Wouldn't a thread about Eindows be in the wrong forum in the Software for Windows forum? Heck, is there even a proper forum for Eindows XP questions?

I was going to recommend PrimoPDF too, but after reading through the OP again, it looks as though he wants to scan from paper straight to PDF. I can't think of any freeware that does that in one step.

I have a bunch of documents that are scanned tiffs, which my scanner does natively. For me, it is just as "readable" as a pdf, even more so, since every OS out there has a pic viewer of some sort that will read a tiff. Since I do not ammend my scanend documents, or even care to, that is sufficient to me. For the most part, my CPA and I a are really the ones who go over them. But I do admit, having them in PDF if I could do a search for the text that is on them, now that is worth something to me. (I name the receipt where it is from and the date, think "Home_Depot_030307").

Worth how much is the big question...

The program I use is called ABBYY FineReader. It does OCR and PDF creation, so that you get both the image and the full text search. It costs around $400 last I checked. I think Adobe Acrobat has similar capabilities.

Ask Aquaman, he scanned 900 magazines to pdf. I'm sure he didn't use some lousy program.
