I want a tablet but don't want to deal with IOS or Andriod. I want a full web browser not a gimped mobile one. I am willing to give up battery life and touch functionality. I have seen 2 that have caugh my eye the MSI WindPad 110W and the Acer Iconia Tab W500. The MSI looks like a much nicer device but I have seen the W500 for 500 dollars. I really like the black berry optical track on the 110W. Also the W500 comes with a docking station no matter how gimped it is. I would love the ASUS EE slate but can not afford 1k. What windows 7 tablet would you get or recomend?

None. Windows tablets suck till Windows 8 is released. Any and all until then are a waste of money.

Sounds like you just want a laptop anyway. Tablets are toys. You don't get them to do work, you get them to **** off. If you need to do work, get a laptop.

The graphics drivers on that one used to be bad, but Intel just recently stepped up with a better version of EMGD, so it's very decent now. If my experience with the Nokia Booklet is anything to go by, then I wouldn't doubt for a second that the HP Slate 500 with proper drivers would be "the" Win 7 tablet to go for.

That HP Slate is much slower than the Asus Slate. HP is using an Atom and Asus is using Intel i5. BIG difference. Also big difference in price.

Unfortunately with tablets, you can't be cheap and expect to get remotely what you want.

Except the rare occasions like the HP Touchpad fire sale... 🙂
 
That HP Slate looks extremely bad... Why would anyone willingly sentence themselves to that? I'd rather gouge my eyes out... Probably would anyway if I had to use this D:

The ASUS Slate... There's a fan on that D: 4.5h battery is also lol-worthy. And that's idle...

OP, just get a laptop. Avoid Atoms like the plague too. If you want a Windows tablet, just wait until Windows 8 is out and Tegra3-equipped stuff comes out. No idea if those will be good, but what's there today is just very much not worth it.

Right now it's either iOS or Android or don't bother, really.
 
Like others have said, get an laptop if that's what you are looking for. Tablets are purely for consumption of informetion. They are not for production of more than a few lines in an email.
While I love the ease of use of a tablet/pad, typing on them absolutely sucks.
Though if you're not above talking to it, go with an Android tablet as the speach to text function is actually very accurate.

Nope. Both are equally fast given general tasks. The Asus Slate might be faster while doing processor-intensive tasks (anything more than typing a few words), but at the same time, it gets a lot hotter, a lot noisier, a lot slower (due to thermal throttling), and a lot less battery life. 5 hours claimed? You'd be lucky to even get 2 out of it at full use. The HP Slate can really get 5 hours without trying.

If you'd ever tried one out, it's not that bad while just doing things generally. The video you linked has a very inexperienced user reviewing the tab. If he'd just disabled Aero, it would be a LOT more responsive. Intel Atom Z drivers on Vista and 7 are very bad with Aero on.

That said though, I'd agree that if the tablet is for light browsing, iOS or Android should be the premium choice.

However, I'd also recommend a laptop or a Win 7 tablet still... if Flash is involved.

I have both a netbook and a laptop. Just want something I can have a full browser experience that I can hold comfortably and move room to room with ease. Be really nice for fantasy football on sundays.
 
Most of the better rated tablets are iOS or Android based. The only ones I can think of that are not are the Acer Iconia, Toshiba's model, etc. even still, HP exited the tablet market and I can see the IBM clone makers doing so also. Why sell if iOS and Android have the brand strength? That said, the Playbook is good in functionality terms, but apart from iOS and Android it's a virtual desert.

One also has to look for app stores, and outside of iOS and Android, it's generally weak.
 
I will say I have no idea what they cost, but if he had no intention of spending near 1K for his current known prefered tablet, why would he buy one of those macbooks.
 
You can not mix together the iPad and Androids with real computers.

These devices are cute consumer gizmos but calling them computers is like calling the cute Fiat 500 a convertible racing car.

I've read the reviews of the ACER and MSI and they're nothing but positive, in fact very positive. With some tweaks they say W7 runs surprsingly well, not sure where all the hate here is coming from. Storage seems to be a problem though, but what I took away from the reviews that the ACER and MSI can do the job of a netbook/laptop no problem, you just need to take the time to streamline the OS. People were generally surprised with the functionality of win7, enough so that I'm willing to take the risk.

I'm also in the market for a portable computer for school/work since my laptop got stolen and if I can't wait for win8/Tegra 3 I'm really thinking of pulling the trigger on the ACER or MSI. btw, when is win8/tregra 3 coming out?

well not to be pedantic, but what else can a tablet be if not a computer? considering it processes information in the same way as a traditional personal computer, what is the difference?
 
That is 1 awesome tablet but about 500 dollars more than I want to spend. I will wait for more reviews of the MSI tablet. Just wish it was E-350 process in there and the hard drive was easy to upgrade.
