I am thinking of going there but I just wanted some opinions before I made a decision. How was your experience? How would you rate the academics? How would you rate the partying/social activities?

I visited it when I was making decisions. The campus is...plain to say the least. It's a terrific school for academics and is very good in getting you into internships/co-op positions. A friend of mine graduated after 3 years and is currently working for Cisco in a very good position.

Why would anyone consider a school based on that?
Unless you were concerned that it was just a party school and you wouldn't get anything accomplished academically, which I'm pretty sure R.I.T. is not.I used to live in Rochester and R.I.T. was well regarded at the time.

My best friend went there for undergrad.
The trimesters are a bitch and don't expect it to be a hip partyish school. There are very few women, but lots of nerds/geeks doing drugs and doing nerd stuff.

There's a reason they use the term "Brick City". When I left (05) they had finished a lot of new athletic facilities and a couple of new buildings.
For many of the majors, internships are a mandatory part of the curriculum. They had some great CS faculty, as well as SE. In retrospect, I *really* wish I had taken advantage of their MS bridge program.
And in regards to the male/female ratio, much of it depends on which program. Bio and liberal arts were much more balanced, while on average there were 1-2 girls in each of my CS classes.

dorms still suck. cafeterias are great but gracie's sucks so bad. ratio is now 2:1 and it still sucks.
partying sucks too, you need to go off campus to have some fun. oh yes, i won't forget the colony manor raid!
edit: i'm a 5th year student there.

ohh man the garbage plate! forgot all about that.
I visited the open house last year. I got excepted in mid December and am planning on going there and majoring in ME. There's another open house coming up on April 11th. From what I heard, you have to put work in to get good grades. Slacking off won't get you anywhere. Also the female/male ratio isn't as bad as it seems as a lot of the "nerds" stay inside and play WoW. As for parties.. if you know who to hang out with you will have a lot of them.
I just graduated from there (with my BS in Mechanical Engineering). Depends on what you are going into on the social life. Engineering the bulk of your social life after the first year is when you are in the Engineering commons studying with other people. If you go into the sciences like math or chem you have somewhat more of a social life. Art and business all you have is a social life. M/F Ratio is much much better than it was 5 years ago. As a Freshmen you are looking at about a 2:1 maybe a little better in your class. They are pushing pretty hard to accept more females.
In terms of academics. Pretty good. Classes were hard but not impossible. I got my first co-op the summer before my third year. Kept that co-op till I graduated but ended up accepting a job offer at a different place. Most people I know graduating in Engineering already have jobs prior to graduation or are staying on for masters. I don't think I know anyone who doesn't have a job who is graduating this year. If you are looking for job placement RIT is great.
First winter is always the worst. But after they get easier and you don't mind the snow or cold much anymore. The surrounding area is all strip malls and restaurants but other than that there wasn't much to do. I was usually to busy to get off campus much anyway so that wasn't really a big deal. I only ever went to Rochester (the city) twice and the first time I went there I saw a fight between these two busted up hookers who looked like they were stoned out of their minds. They were just going at it on the side of the street. This was in the "good" part of town too.

I graduated just last year. The academics are great, and prepared me really well for my current job, but the social aspect was lacking. As already stated the ratio is less than desirable. In the computing school you're looking at half a dozen guys to girls. The weather is pretty nasty; this coming from a Mainer.
But, if you get past the bland architecture, and the lack of women/partying. You realize that as it might be bland, it is very well kept. The lack of (classic) social life is just part of having a high concentration of geeks/nerds/dorks. The academics are very good though. And that's what really matters down the road. When I was looking at schools in 2001, I ended up picking Clarkson University out of my choices of that, RIT, and RPI. I'm personally glad I did, it's a slightly less known school then the others but the small size makes it fantastic (I majored in Math/CS/SoftE)... by my junior year my classes had in some cases literally 3 people in them so you get a ton of one on one time with professors and everyone knows you....
As far as social life goes, the school itself is terrible (5/1 male/female), but withing a 10 minute radius you have SUNY Potsdam (a big teaching and music school, so lots of females) and also SLU (another school with higher then average female percents) so it isn't so bad. If you have any interest in checking it out I can have one of my old profs call you no problem, I still keep in touch.

I second Troy pretty much being a shit hole. Sophomore at RPI here. My roommate says RIT is in a much better neighborhood, but I've never been to Rochester.
I?m not really sure about the drinking though, yeah there are frat parties and plenty of alcoholics but it seems pretty stereotypical.
